Just heard the company I used to work for years ago has gone under, but in the final couple of years they were paying the staff minimum wage through the books and giving them the balance of their salaries in cash?

How can you get that past the taxman

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

They couldn't have been declaring all of their income. How much work were they doing off the books?

It's bad practice on every level.

You couldn't get it past a simple audit.. If the balance sheet doesn't meet, you can hardly pass a few hundred thousand £ off as petty cash. The owners could be facing a pretty lengthy jail sentence whether a public or private company I'd think.

. Both the company and their employees would know that this practice is illegal and totally unfair to legitimate businesses . Tax evaders mean that all of us who work under PAYE extra tax.
