Engage them in conversation. If it's going well, ask. In a "I'm not a maniac" way.

And don't send them knob pics straight off the bat.

Once you have passed a few messages it should be ok to ask them if you could invite them to be a friend. It makes future contact easier etc....

Dont ask

I get asked lots of times and as I say on profile I don't accept friends requests till met

asking for a face pic is fine though for me anyway
