You never look back apparently lol, So im toying with the idea of a Macbook ( for music production and graphics etc )

Im planning to dual boot it with Win 8.1 as well for best of both worlds, just wondered what the advantages are of Mac OS over windows ??

Im very very PC literate but not a huge amount of experience with Mac OS so any advice greatly received

I know little about what you want your mac to do , but we have had macs in this house for years and are very happy with them. We've never had a virus and they've always done what we asked them to do. We will never go down the windows route.

My friend is exactly the same and persuaded his housemate to get one, neither would go back to windows.

Do you plan to allow windows machines to access it across a network? If so drop a virus scanner on the mac. We got plagued with a few virus when we wanted to share music across all the machines in the house. Other than that its not that much different.

I have a MacBook and its great in terms of reliability etc . For me the main pain is inter-connectivity with work stuff where everything is Windows so its a case of having to remember to save and send docs in the right format.

Office for Mac is mainly ok but Powerpoint for Mac is a pain in the arse. All the slides etc look great at this end but when someone opens them at the other end they are all over the place.

Would probably stay with Mac though.

I bought a Mac, granted, purely on aesthetics!!

However my other half hates it with a passion I rarely see for much else.

His computer knowledge has all seemed from working with windows, his degree and masters was done on computers using windows and the Mac is just way too counter intuitive for him to get his poor little nerdy head round although for photoshop and design programmes he seems to get over the phobia

Houses for courses.

I've always used Windows PC's, find OS-X completely counter-intuitive, have never had a virus and have just built a new PC that specification wise will blow any Mac out of the water (at a similar price point of £1100). A Mac of the same spec would have been closer to £2500.

On the other hand...damn they look pretty!

we have an iMac after having windows for many many yrs and many many problems.had the imac 3 yrs and not one single problem with it .they do cost more but they are super reliable so no repair bills

Once you go Mac....you'll be taking it back!

Got one of their fancy laptops

Lasted a grand total of 5 boots before it was fucked!...dead HD

NEVER had that before with pcs and laptops

Was not Impressed to say the least

However their customer service was brilliant and it was replaced...works ok now

Unless you're going to use Macs for dedicated Mac only software (like Final Cut) then they're great.

If you're only going to use it for internet browsing and/or documents and the occasional game then you're paying too much for it because you could get a Windows laptop/PC for under half the price.

Macs are pretty to look at, but that's about it.

Apple are very good at repackaging what's already on the market (or been on the market) and saying it's amazing now that it's in an Apple device.

With all that said, I can't fault iPads - other than the overinflated price!

Macs are the greeter machine , I have a Mac book pro and and Mac ,,, but be warned running widowson them are t ideal and often have trouble with windows operating on apple ,, so I'd suggest not running windows on them

Mines recently gone down with a graphics cards issue, something Apple know about but are unwilling to repair, re_iew the model your after usually the ones with the Nvidia card.

Got a few macs but my main one is a dual quad core and 32 gig ram, 4 SSD drives... Runs like a dream and boots in seconds

Best bet is not to dual boot windows but if needed run it in fusions or parallels but disable outside access for it so it can't cause problems ie viruses n such

Being a creative professional, my team and I use Mac. This I'll say is based on inherited usage from our Uni days. We also use Windows for running our admin solutions. Therefore, I have no argument with the old adage of Mac v Windows. To be honest, since Mr. Jobs passed, we are starting to feel Mac has become an OS for the consumer and not the pros. -Mr.

I'm using both Mac and PC at work but in all honesty, I always favour the PC.

There are just too many quirks which annoy me with the Mac. Nothing major, just little things like not having a two button mouse as standard, re-arranging the keyboard and other minor irritations.

Personally, I would (and did) just buy a "Really Good" PC.... i7 with loads of RAM and a SSD to boot from.

Oh and as a side note, if you buy a MAC... don't dual boot, just run windows in a Virtual Machine. It's much easier to set up and will allow you to use both simultaneously without re-booting.

if you are practically minded then build yourself a hackintosh for a third of the price of a mac ..... plenty of info on how to go about this online .... the operating system is the stable part of a mac not the hard ware ..... most of the hardware is cheap crap same as in PCs .... mac as a company are only interested in looking cool and this is reflected in the questions they ask when they inter_iew you for a job. basically a mac is like a kia rebadged as ferrari but you get the stig to drive you around in it

I haven't had this problem, however someone I know found they couldn't load a program if the program already existed. They had to remove the original to reload. Just a thought.

When you switch on the MacBook what are you seeing on the screen?

Did the old HD work ok?

I have a usb and a dvd to boot from, i tried another hard drive which i formatted and the most bizarre thing i put it in macbook and it showed up as a windows 8 drive and tried to load win 8 lol ??

That aside if i put the usb in i get the efi boot option but then it just freezes up, if i put the dvd in it trys to load for 30 secs or so then ejects the disc ??

As long as you have wifi available - start the MacBook and hold down Command and R.

If available it will ask you to select a wifi connection (and allow you to enter your wifi password).

Try this and see what happens...?

For music production [especially Logic] there is nothing better...Totally tremendous and can do stuff well into professional music standard.

I can't recommend the mc highly enough...drop me a line if you want to chat about the software [though I imagine you have a good idea already].

then i think my best guess for this situation is to find someone who has an operating Mac so you can make a rescue disc (or usb stick) using the tools that are on their operating system.

It may even be possible (if you can put the new 1TB HDD in to some kind of USB caddy) you can then format the HDD directly from the working Mac (HSF+ format). and then be able to burn a download of Yosemite directly on to the HDD.

When you then put the HDD in to your MacBook the system should boot...

Not an immediate solution I know, but something else to think about..

As for "Once you go Mac" it's pretty much spot on.

I use Mac's and PC's and much prefer my Mac's.

Granted the outlay at first is costly but if you upgrade every 3 years they sort of make sense as you end up getting a fair bit back on resell value and from there for the cost of a basic PC you can have a brand new Mac, where a the resell value of a 3 year old windows PC is not worth that much!

Also in the video it mentions the new HDD needs to already be pre-formatted to MAC OS Extended (Journaled) - which for these guys is not the case, as it is a brand new HDD. And you can only format to MAC OS Extended from an operating Mac system.

However, if it helps, I have made a bootable Yosemite Installer drive for you. As I understand it, all you need to do is put the stick in your mac usb port, turn the mac on while holding down the Option key and then select the USB drive with the installer on.

From there you can format the new HDD correctly, and put a fresh installation of OS Yosemite on.

I was just thinking that if he has the old hard to put that back in and use the new as a external hard drive and format it from there, then use the transfer program.

I've done it a couple of times with my old MBP's and never had a problem

Wow thats really cool of you many thanks !! Hopefully it will work and yes once i have an OS on i can format the 1TB and chuck that back in, or may just opt for an SSD instead lol !!

Stick with it - I used Macs on my last degree to run Final cut, Logic and Pro Tools. There's a reason that practically every audio/Film/TV studio in the world uses Macs. The O/S, being Unix based is far superior to Windoze for real time compute intensive operations, and is much more stable/resilient. Most people these days by Mac just to be seen to be cool. Frankly, for document creation, admin and interweb, the Windoze user interface is far better and the platform is better supported and patronised by software authors.
