We have been given a staffy pup, by a friend who couldn't keep her. She's 12 weeks old. We don't know much about them, as always had German Shepherds.

We came home today to find her swinging from the table lamp!! (Yes we did unplug everything before we went out!)

Can anyone give us some advice on the breed and what to expect please? As we want a friendly sociable pet.

She's off to her first puppy class on Friday.

We know you're all a wealth of knowledge lol

Thanks in advance xx

my sister has got a young staffie and she is great, bit mental but think thats just becuase she is young.

Once you get the training under way you should be ok. As dog owners currently you should know its the training that makes the difference in an animal

Ours is mad too, think all puppies are the same.

Training is the most important thing with any dog. That's why we are taking her to socialising classes, do a bit of training there too.

Our other dog is well trained, so are the kids lol

Staffy's are great pets. A lot of our family have them, and none of them have had any problems what so ever.

They are a very social breed and very easy to train.

If your pets are part of your family you will be rewarded with companionship, loyalty and unconditional love.

we have two staffies, and the arent like other dogs.

they need lots of love, and hate beeing alone, they are very good family dogs.

we love ours but they do take alot of work.

one of ours came from a rescue home and had been abused so is even more hard work, but the rewards are huge

I'm not even getting into this debate.

I nearly lost my rag the last time a question about dogs came up.

As long as you train it properly, accept that staffies can be a little more hard work then some other dogs, and feed it a decent food, ie not Bakers, then it will be fine.

Our son has a year old Staffie, a female who is adorable. Yes she did need firm handling as a puppy, but she has been socialised from the beginning with other dogs, children, noises and lot's of other "stressful" things that she may come up against. We found that if left for more than a couple of hours, using a crate or a cage was a good idea, in fact she thinks it's her bed now and goes into it of her own accord. The only thing I would say is when you buy your dog toys buy something VERY hard wearing, as their teeth especially the back ones are very strong and she chews through ordinary toys in minutes!! But she is worth all the money we spend on her, and is a beautiful family pet now.

Good luck and have lot's of fun together

As long as it's a Staffie and not a Pit Bull type dog there should be nothing to worry about.

It's the owners of some Staffs that are the problem, not the dogs, they get a bad reputation for the stupid few who bring them up wrong from the start, but there again that goes for any breed of dog. If you're prepared to put in the hard work from the beginning, they are fantastic family pets.

Staffordshire bull terriers are very wilful dogs, need firm handling but lots n lots of love. They need lots of walks and love rough n tumble. Mine is now 15 and still loves to rip the odd tyre to pieces in the garden.

My mate used to have hers hanging from a mop head and carry her round

said it strengthened her jaw up.

But she would advise NOT leaving alone as they do chew...anything

We've had two,girl/boy,both were rescue dogs.

I (Ric) have grow up with all breeds of dogs,Border Collies,Labs,Dalmation,X's.

The most loyal, loving and affectionate have been the Staffies.

So much so that I now say "There are dogs and then there are Staffies".

Neither of the Staffs chewed anything in the house or fouled the house.

The girl was 4 when we got her and the dog was 2.

He'd been ill treated and it's believed was being trained for fighting before got we him.

He'd had a broken leg and a damaged spine, for which he had pain killers for the rest of his life.

He lived to be 15 and only died last month.

They can also be very sensitive to people arguing, raised voices etc.

As for the "Get rid now" comment, absolute bollocks!

Treat your pup with patience, show her plenty of love and affection and you'll have yourself a loving, loyal friend.

Thank you for all the sensible posts, and information.

We are feeding her James wellbeloved puppy, bought her a crate today, and lots of strong toys. She takes herself off to her little bed when she's tired. She is very much a part of the family already. Our house is like a train station lol so she is getting used to lot of different people.

We are looking forward her being part of the family for a very long time xx
