Oh dear god.

More benefit hating and fat shaming. This time all rolled into one.

OP,this is a minority of cases. A tiny (no size puns intended) minority.

It's also possible to be too thin to work. Many anorexics or people severely underweight through other eating disorders are too ill to work.

I remember watching a programme about the largest guy in the world. His girlfriend was his feeder. So she was involved in some extent in the size he had become too.

To get so big you cannot leave the house , that is not just a physical issue - there is generally some psychological reason behind it. We should spend more time trying to sort the issues behind how they got to that stage instead of judging them from a snap shot of their life . The programme makers generally have no understanding of how they got to where they are now. How bloody sad to be stuck inside all the time. It's no life is it!

On sky TV seen some people so big cant get out of bed . But until they are ready to stop there is no hope .. Some get so nasty when they don't get there food so 9/10 feeders give in. The eating thing is really about why .. like a junkie with drugs food is there drug .

Why not get your kids to wear name badges to help you remember their names? If they all wear the same jumper or t-shirt when you go out, it will help you recognise them if they wander off?

Opinions can be picked up cheap in the market place while such commodities as courage and fortitude and faith are in alarmingly short supply"

I work with many obese people who need help and care because they are to obese to get out of bed, but do you know what each and every one has their own story, their own personality and their own reasons for being obese and not a single person who I go into and help are to fat to get out of bed through choice, yes they over eat but not everything is black and white and I doubt this programme with portray the truth behind many over weight peoples problems

That's true but not everybody over eats through pure greed, some use it as a form of self harming, its just another way of venting your anger

One women who I know through my job was abused as a child and she used food as a safety blanket, in her head if she is 'fat and ugly' no man would will her and she will be safe, she's only in her and early 20s its very sad to hear her yet I bet everybody who sees her just sees a fat lazy kebab muching slob

There are so many reasons why people over eat not all obese people should be put in the same boat

Some obesity can't be helped, asthmas sufferers on steroids put on a lot of weight, same with people with depression, some tablets cause extreme weight gain,I put 39lbs on in 3 months when I was on them, the majority of obesity is due to gluttony tho,my cousin is a size 26 and blames an underactive/overactive thyroid while she sits with 4 packets of crisps

There is a difference between being fat and being obese, I am over weight, there is nothing wrong with me I just eat the wrong food, I'm back at fat camp and I'm working on it, I'm typical of many people who carry a few extra pounds, but when people get to the point they are so over weight it affects their health and mobility there are usually underlining problems that go beyond being greedy

There's so much going on here.

Isn't obesity linked to wealth? It's cheaper to stuff yourself with sweet fatty Crap, than fresh fruit and veg.

McDonald's etc encourage you to get the double burger, large fries, cheese, bacon toppings, cola - sugar solution, milkshake with lumps of extra fat and sugar or chocolate etc in all what? 2000 calories??

Every supermarket and food manufacturer should share the blame, but don't because it's all about profit.

How often do we go for a cook / chill meal because we're all too busy working because we are all consumers and want the latest stuff. More stuff, stuff we don't need.

We can all lead simpler, less self indulgent lives.

Less is more.

Why don't they they run endless documentaries on the more concerning worlds of politics, banking and media?

That means less £ in advertising revenues and sponsorships

I know you lot don't like reading, but take a moment to digest some of the comments made in a 1958 speech by Edward R. Murrow.

It is as, if not more, pertinent now than it was then, almost 60 years ago.

The last paragraph is particularly spot on imho.

"During the daily peak _iewing periods, television in the main insulates us from the realities of the world in which we live ...

surely we shall pay for using this most powerful instrument of communication to insulate the citizenry from the hard and demanding realities which must be faced ...

I have reason to know, that when the evidence on a controversial subject is fairly and calmly presented, the public recognizes it for what it is - an effort to illuminate rather than to agitate ...

If radio news is to be regarded as a commodity, only acceptable when saleable, and only when packaged to fit the advertising appropriation of a sponsor, then I don't care what you call it — I say it isn't news ...

One of the basic troubles with radio and television news is that both instruments have grown up as an incompatible combination of show business, advertising and news ...

Each of the three is a rather bizarre and demanding profession. And when you get all three under one roof, the dust never settles.

The top management of the networks with a few notable exceptions, has been trained in advertising, research, sales or show business. But by the nature of the corporate structure, they also make the final and crucial decisions having to do with news and public affairs.

Frequently they have neither the time nor the competence to do this...

There is no suggestion here that networks or individual stations should operate as philanthropies. But I can find nothing in the Bill of Rights or in the Communications Act which says that they must increase their net profits each year, lest the Republic collapse.

I am frightened by the imbalance, the constant striving to reach the largest possible audience for everything; by the absence of a sustained study of the state of the nation.

Do not be deluded into believing that the titular heads of the networks control what appears on their networks.

All are responsible to stockholders, and in my experience all are honourable men.

But they must schedule what they can sell in the public market.

The sponsor of an hour's television program is not buying merely the six minutes devoted to commercial message. He is determining, within broad limits, the sum total of the impact of the entire hour. If he always, invariably, reaches for the largest possible audience, then this process of insulation, of escape from reality, will continue to be massively financed, and its apologist will continue to make winsome speeches about giving the public what it wants, or "letting the public decide."

If we go on as we are, we are protecting the mind of the American public from any real contact with the menacing world that squeezes in upon us...

We are currently wealthy, fat, comfortable and complacent. We have currently a built-in allergy to unpleasant or disturbing information.

Our mass media reflect this. But unless we get up off our fat surpluses and recognize that television in the main is being used to distract, delude, amuse and insulate us, then television and those who finance it, those who look at it and those who work at it, may see a totally different picture too late.

We are to a large extent an imitative society.

This instrument can teach, it can illuminate; yes, and even it can inspire. But it can do so only to the extent that humans are determined to use it to those ends. Otherwise it's nothing but wires and lights in a box"

As I have said there is a difference between being fat and being obese to the point you've rendered yourself disabled which is what this thread was about on opening

Yes cheap food is fatty and unfit, lots buy on a budget, or eat takeaways and get fat but they are still able-bodied because most of us will do something about our weight before we get to the point we are bed bound or can't look after ourselves, a small minority do not and as someone who has worked with obese people I truely believe this minority do not over eat because they are purely greedy or because unhealthy food is cheap, many have real reasons for doing this to themselves usually a traumatic experience which they can not cope with so turn to food for comfort, use it as a way of self abuse etc its not different to someone with anorexia its a unhealthy relationship with food but on the other end of the scale, which needs fixing mentally and until it is a diet will never work, this problem goes way beyond just simply over eating and being fat

You're right. It's fact- watch the tv schedules the next few months. The programmes they make will be in direct relation to policies they want people to be irate about. "

I normally find myself in agreement with most of what you say but I really don't think the BBC, Channel 4, ITV or Channel 5 are bastions of right wing authoritarian bigots against the undeserving benefits class. IF that's what you're saying.

To get so big you cannot leave the house , that is not just a physical issue - there is generally some psychological reason behind it. We should spend more time trying to sort the issues behind how they got to that stage instead of judging them from a snap shot of their life . Unbelievable.

You mean like the 'propaganda' these same TV stations put out about the health service being in crises. I guess that's government controlled propaganda to.

The government has no more control over what these stations put out now than it had in the past, which is non.

Just because it's telling a story which you think supports the current governments line does not make it government propaganda any more than stories about the failing health service or Tax avoidance are labour propaganda. Sometimes they are just true and the problems they bring up should be addressed.

All obesity is self inflicted. There's no such thing as food fairies that pump it in you during the night.

I'm sure there's a few people who have medical problems or mental problems with eating but the vast majority are just from plain old eating too much!

My brother is that exact type, he works hard, eats good food, rarely eats junk food apart from the odd Chinese take out once a month.

He just loves food and is probably about 8 stone overweight, although he's still quite fit has no high cholesterol or blood pressure or heart problems.

He tries a diet(he cuts back from his usual massive portions) every year but it never really lasts and he's been overweight since he was twenty so it's all he's ever known.

The couple on channel 5 gets a combined total of £2000.00. and some other fat benefits. Why loose weight and loose all those benefits.

I don't watch TV , so can you please clarify for what period of time the 2K stated is for please ? Monthly ?

It's monthly. Only MPs cost us £2000 a day or more.

The average MP, based on a 253 day working year, gets about £265 a day

plus expenses, renting out their paid for second homes and backhanders for pushing through bills "

Expenses are just that, expenses. If their making a profit on them then that's a crime, as is renting out their paid for second home and most definitely receiving backhanders for pushing through bills. If you have evidence that this is going on now then you should bring that evidence forward.

If MP's are breaking the law they, just like any person breaking the law on benefits fraud or tax evasion, are liable for prosecution.

Just finished watching this. I feel both annoyed and sympathetic.

But mostly I feel something more needs to done to help these people. I really don't think that leaving them to rot on benefits is particularly good for them or anyone else.

The land of grey peas and bacon

Ok I caved in and watched it after there was nothing else on TV and that couple that got married celebrated a weight loss by eating a dirty kebab...however what saddened me the most was the 18 year old I really felt for her but for her mum to say that benefits don't pay enough for them to eat healthily...they do its just about crafty shopping.

PMSL. I was going to get myself a kebab tonight until I watched and saw that. Have to settle for a Pot Noodle now instead.

"This is a classic example of blaming a class of people to shift focus from the real difficulties caused by austerity.

It is disproportionate unbalenced media."
