Hereabouts

Right, now that I have your attention, I'm looking for a little advice.

Short version: I want to move up north.

Long version is a little complicated.

Has anyone ever relocated to another part of the country?

Did you already have a job to go to?

What do you do if you have no job and no place to live?

I need to do this for me. There's nothing for me down south. And I can't afford a place of my own blah blah.

I'll turn my message filters off if anyone wants to pm me about this.

I'm not even sure what sort of advice I'm looking for.

I moved about 150 miles away from home a few years ago. I had a job, relocation payment and help with accommodation.

I wouldn't have done it without any of those, it was fucking lonely and I regret doing it, but it was worth it financially and for the experience.

I'd imagine it's only as difficult as you make it for yourself.

If you have no financial commitments where you are or contracted in a job then I'd imagine it no more difficult than trying to move locally and finding a new job.

Don't be kidded into believing it is all cheap up here.

Some places you can get a flat for £300 to £400 a month.

Others, like central Manchester, you'd be lucky see change from £700 a month in rent alone

2 bed down here is £1200+ pcm. But it's not about the cost

I've contemplated this as well, but obviously moving south, but when you have a settled job, a mortgage and the thought of starting again all on your own, it is a scary prospect!

It's a bit like the chicken and the egg storey, what do you do first?

Get some money behind you. A deposit & first months rent could be anywhere from £800 to £2 grand.

Do some job searches online, come up a few times and get a feel for the region. See if you like it before you make any moves.

Assume you need enough to sustain living up here on your own.

There's no saying your friend will stick around or meets a northern lad n piss off with him ...

And I know I'm capable of doing it, so I don't think I would have a problem getting a job in care. Or as a receptionist. Or a cleaner. Or in a hotel. There's lots of things I could do, really x

She's already got a northern lad, and she is pissing off with him xD but she doesn't want to live with him. But her daughter needs her dad. So I think that's why she wants to move

I don't have any of that, and it's still a scary prospect. If I'm lucky, I'll be able to find a place to stay until I'm earning. But even then, there's a chance I wont. And with no money behind me, and any money I earn being spent on living down here, it's gonna have to be a leap of faith

Seriously, the move has to be for YOU, not your friend or it will likely end up in tears, tantrums and tiaras.

I know I might sound like a dreadful old stick in the mud, but if you do move, it'd be a great shame if it didn't work out for you.

Those rent prices are nothing compared to the South East, and in London you'd be lucky to get a room for that price!

Don't you live with your mum now? If it all went wrong you could always go back to her place?

If you trust your mate I'd say go for it too. Could be brilliant.

We've both done it. I moved to London because I'd met a girl and it seemed a good idea, had enough money to last a couple of months and somewhere to stay short term. No job but this was before the recession so not really an issue and I was working within weeks.I had friends down here anyway so it wasn't that difficult to get a social life. I wouldn't recommend doing it like that though and with hindsight would have tried to make it a lot more secure!

crystal did it the opposite way, she had a job that took her there but knew no one, didn't know London at all and found the whole experience more than a little intimidating and overwhelming.

As cliched as it sounds, i do think upping sticks and moving somewhere new is undeniably character building and well worth doing

Oh I know that, but for a young girl without a steady or well paid job, it's still a bloody big chunk of money.

I just wanted to make her aware that, in certain areas, renting still isn't cheap up here.

But on the rooms front ...

OP maybe you could look into house shares too ?

I moved from Eastbourne to Chesterfield, via Birmingham, was a gradual drift, uni in brum then up here for work. Helps if you have a job to go to, they may even help with relocation costs.

If things don't work out you can always go back.

I'd get looking at jobs first, then see where you become successful. Or if your friend has a job lined up, and you end up at a major city, you'll be able to find work if you're determined enough.

Cost me £550 a month for a tiny box room when I lived in London. Shared a house there for 18 months

That's the sort of positive attitude that will see you okay in the end

We did this. We both lived in Bristol after uni, but gradually all our friends disappeared to find better schools as their kids reached school-age.

It was quite liberating, but also daunting, knowing we were prepared to go anywhere in the country.

Sorted a new job for me first, then we rented while we checked out the area before deciding where to settle down, finally sorted job for mrs ddc.
