The whole issue of an honours list it outdated. The names given to some of the awards are just so last century its un true. Who would want to be associated with the British Empire. For the most part its the rich getting slaps on the back from the establishment with a few lollipop ladies thrown in to make it seem its a reward for services to the community!

Outdated? No. Who doesn't like receiving a 'thank you' from society? I'd happily receive a KBE for my services to education.

Greater London

It's a shame the Cinderella charities don't have more of a look in.

I don't agree with people in their own profession being rewarded for what they get paid for anyway but when it affects a niche or general community for the greater good that is fine.

I like receiving my annual bonus for exceeding my targets in my job. Nothing wrong with enjoying recognition for a job well done.

Then if its a community addition to actively seek recognition from what is a elitist list of awards is worse!

Only the more notable ones make the press. The many thousands that receive such awards as the MBE are rewarded for their community work in many different spheres. There are also the military ones where once again the majority of the awards do go to those in the field. Only the higher awards or those deemed as celebrity make the news, because thats the way of the press.

Out of circa 12000 awards of varying kinds over 75% are given to people in government or those just doing their job. One noticeable inclusion is an Architect called Quilan Terry (now OBE) who happens to design houses for the Prince of Wales!

Of course there will always be cronyism, I would give a Damehood to my mum if I gave the awards. However credit the the architect, if he designed a rubbish house he'd probably be in the tower, and not one he designed.....

Military awards are altogether different. I am talking about the crass stupidity of Sir John Hurt and Dame Joan Collins awarded for their services to drama an entertainment respectively.
