I have the choice of going to see a friend or staying home on my own. I'm not sure I can face a two hour drive so I will probably have a very quiet night on my own wearing a big, warm robe.

Ooooh, nice evening. For something like that I'd probably go for a dress over tights and boots. Not too dressy. Unless you wish to compete with the 17 year olds who will be TOWIEing it up, in which case don a strapless dress and 6 inch heels. Don't forget the fake tan!
