Now I cannot, as you point out, do exceptional but can do exceedingly good mince pies. Does that qualify if I make them an inch bigger or lets say bigger than average?

I always just take it to mean that they don't generally want to meet single men/single women/couples/whatever but if someone came along who they got on well with or fancied loads they'd make an exception.
