So I get a call last night from my Mum - they'd been out for a couple of hours and got home to find they'd been burgled. The little sh*ts had turned the place over - prised the entire window out of the back bedroom, ripped drawers out, strewn stuff all over the house, nicked her brand new iPad, stole the car off the front drive and also took a load of her jewelry. The jewelry wasn't hugely valuable but was massively sentimental to her, including some things from her mum.

My Dad was diagnosed with Alzheimer's a couple of years back, so he struggles to comprehend what's going on at the best of times...so last night he was all over the place and mum had to keep explaining to him what had happened and why the police were there.

Last night I was soooOOOOO f*****g angry! But had to keep it gripped for the parent's sake - wouldn't have helped to have me stomping around threatening blue murder!

Just worried that their house is marked now - I know thieves sometimes go back to a place they've turned over once so they can nick the stuff that's been replaced on insurance. Going to get some extra security lighting for the back and also thinking about getting some internet cameras so that if they do come back, I might at least be able to get their faces on cam.

Sorry...no real point to this post - just hugely frustrated and needed to unload a bit.

Go and get their stuff in order for them. Help your mum sift through the mire that follows these things. If possible, maybe spend the odd night there with them.

Being burgled is a violation.

I found my mum & dads home burgled 25 years ago or so and it still lives with me to this day, hence why our flat is like Fort Knox.

They could still get in if they wanted to but they'd have to have some time on their hands.

Might be worth a visit to the nearest cash converters and ask about any jewellery etc brought in ?? Just a suggestion but would imagine they would want to get cash asap ??

You deserve to be angry. There should be a whole new level of hell for these dirty low life's who do this kind of thing.

Take advice from crime prevention officer.

Think about getting a dog for them.

Make things as difficult as possible for them to get into and out of the garden.

Don't leave any boxes out with the rubbish of any new stuff purchased, leave it till binmen turn up. Or take to local tip.

Hope that they are ok.

Yes I hope they catch them...but to be honest, the chances of that are virtually nil. The forensics guy said they'd worn gloves so there were no finger prints

I helped her sort out things as best we could last night and she was actually doing OK - offered to stay the night, but she shooed me out! I think she was hoping they'd come back so she could clout them with her griddle pan

The point of the thread is to vent some very understandable frustration.

So sorry to hear this has happened to your parents.

When we were burgled some years ago, I printed a leaflet with a photo of the front of the house and "don't let them get away with it".

It then explained we'd been burgled and how scared our four young children were. We asked for anything unusual seen to be written on the back, along with contact details and pop it through our door.

I leafleted all our neighbours and every car that parked in our road. I did the cars a week later too.

We had loads of leaflets with snippets of info.

A week later a carer for a lady up the road told us about a guy. Described him. Showed us 'his' mobile number, which turned out to be my daughters. He had given his first name and claimed he was looking for work.

The local cash generator shop were offered our things by someone else.

When questioned by the police he gave a no comment inter_iew until they asked him about his friend by name and described him.

His friend went down for two years having coughed to a hundred or so other offences.

That's how I vented my anger

So sorry to hear what's happened. My Nan was burgled some years ago and it was so hard for her to feel safe again. In the end she moved house. I hope they catch the scumbags that did this to your parents.

Might be worth contacting Apple if you have the box the iPad came in? They can sometimes trace them with the serial numbers when it's subsequently connected to wifi x

My house was burgled a couple of years ago... Broke in through the front door,so i reinforced the door and locks.A couple of months later they came back and broke in through the window.threw a brick through it... I feel your anger fella, i hope your mum and dad are okay.

its not the best of subjects and im sorry to hear about it

but if they have prised the whole window out they are aware of how it was fitted to a degree

old windows the clip on plastic was on the outside with no tape to stick too newer type has the tape on the inside

newer windows have the plastic on the inside and tape on the outside to stick too

now if they have taken the whole frame and window out on a new window its the fault of the fitter just for foaming the window into place it goes on alot with window companys and fitters

if an older fitting of the window frame then id say they are aware how it was fitted in the first place

Of course there's a point to this thread, to vent your anger and frustrations and I can well understand and sympathise.

I was burgled many years ago and it's a bledi horrible experience. They prised a down stairs window open, went through everything in our bedroom [I was married at the time] The took a lot of my jewellery that were irreplaceable and had lots of sentimental value as some had been left to me by relatives. Rummaged through all my stuff and left them all over the floor.

The worst thing was that they left me feeling scared to be in my own home and I could never forgive them for that.

I really hope they get caught but more than that, I hope your parents will be ok. Best wishes x

This is usually covered by the police anyway, they will contact places like cash converters or entertainment exchange etc. The staff at these places do checks on the serial numbers too so its important to contact the police asap, which has been done.

broke in stole games console camera and took car keys to steal car all while we were asleep upstairs

I feel for you and your parents no one deserves the pain caused by scum

perhaps the Arab solution is a way forward they can't steal without hands

We are really sorry to hear about your parents misfortune. People who do this are nothing but scum. They have no morals what so ever and it's high time the courts put in place far harsher sentences. Maybe if they are caught all off thier posessions should be confiscated and sold to compensate your parents.

Please do remember and up the security quickly. I got turned over in a realativly short space of time !!! Like another poster my home is like Fort Knox. The police told me they do tend to come back because they know the lay out of the house, it is important for the scum to know a way in but also important to know a way out in case someone comes home.

I told all my neighbours when I was broken into so they were more aware of strangers and folk hanging about.

I does take a very long time to feel settled in your home again. I saw someone at the back of my home and ran round to pan the guys head in but luckily I realised he was my window cleaner !!!!!!!

if your going the camera route I would suggest you go for high quality ones get the discreet hidden ones for indoors and place them well so you can capture the faces of the scumbags.

Colour cameras only work well in good lighting conditions, so higher quality B&W with infrared illumination might be a better way to go.

Hope you and your family recover from the shock soon - it takes a while I know, so give yourselves time and space.

In my line of work I deal with victims of burglaries on a daily basis and it has been an uncommon occurrence that they are victim a second time. (It does happen though). Ask the police to complete a sercurity check and recommend what sercurity is needed.

Cameras are a good option and if you need any advice regarding that let me know as I know a few people in the know. I'm so sorry to hear about your parents ordeal what a horrible situation for them both xx

Be there for your parent, help in every way. If you ve brother and sister what about chipping in and getting better alarm stuff. You minded us growing up now let us mind you's. Believe me that be so touching for you's as a family.

Our next door neighbours have small CCTV all round there house and linked to there phones available to see anywhere. Defo get the señor lightening for back garden. But important not to turn it into fort knocks.

Sorry forgot to mention modern alarms can send at a txt when ur house alarm goes off.

Here in Ireland lately old folks seem to be an easy touch and the scum bags with till there in and terrorise them to get cash sometimes beating the hell out of them - 2/3 have even died

So folks if ya you ve parent s living on there own, see what you can do for them - extra lightening works wonders

I'm in the middle of two houses that were hit during the summer late at night my house was the only one that wasn't. It's scary as often I'm here on my own and it terrifies me. My neighbours have installed shutters as we had an open ally way which was thieves and others paradise so the only way in now is the front door. It's such a horrible crime to do

Really sorry to hear what has happened to your mum and dad and I would feel equally upset and angry if it had happened to mine. There's been lots of good advice and I hope it helps. If there is any chance of catching them it will probably be through the car theft, here's hoping for you.

Is there anyone who could have known that your parents lived there and we're elderly or known the window type? Has anyone visited recently to do work? Are there visual indictations that elderly people may live in the house, (though these are often difficult to remove)? If you are considering cctv, probably go for something obvious on the outside and covert devices internally. The police can advise further, especially if your parents are considered to be vulnerable.

As has previously been said, be there for them. Perhaps offer to stay with them for a few days as I am sure that your mum will feel particularly vulnerable and will have a lot to deal with, with your dad's condition. I appreciate it is easy for me to say but try not to let bitterness invade you- it will only eat you up and have a negative effect on you. It will not affect the scum that did this.

Hope things have settled down for you all. Put your logical head on and sort locks windows etc, an alarm and ask for help to make it harder. They usually look for keys once inside for an easy return visit, don't work harder work smarter than them. Really hope your parents are ok and be a good son.

Really sorry to hear this. We both sympathise and empathise with you. After we were burgled we bought a Y-cam home monitor video camera. Loads any motion to the Web so even if it is stolen you still have the images. Won't prevent a break in but might help you catch the culprits. Might also be useful to keep an eye on your father if he has to be left alone.

Lots of scumbags about. Why not fit an alarm. For 200 quid you can get a wireless yale system that routes to your phone. Dead easy to fit and a good deterrent

Good advice the Yale ones are pretty good pay a little more and you can have it connected to your wifi so it will contact a designated number if there is a problem.

Just as an update, the good news is the police found the car...it was parked up by the side of the road without a scratch on it! So other than having to get the locks changed, the car situation is back to normal.
