I think I would feel guilt if I felt I had let others down, and shame if I had let myself down.

I tend to think guilt is something you feel yourself, shame is something you do to another, project onto another person (or they do to you).

Both come from going against whatever your personal standards and beliefs are, whether you're religious or not.

What about victims of abuse who may feel ashamed/guilty or people who have been raised in a very conservative/judgemental/ religious family and their _iew on life may be a bit different to others. I often have pangs of guilt/shame at this lifestyle but put it down to my upbringing.
