So the scaffolders came at about 9 to remove the scaffolding. They have removed the wooden boards and have retreated to their truck... They have been in there 2 hours!!!

They are being paid by the housing authority, but still, it's starting to annoy me now

Ah well, as long as you aren't footing the bill. It's probably been a quote for the entire job and the scaffolding crew will probably have been given a specific amount of time to do the job, and are being paid on that basis. They can probably do it much quicker than the time allocated, so a nice long breakfast, then they'll prob have it down in time to go for a pint

They charge a set price for erecting and de erecting .

Then rent on how long you use it.

Their sitting in the van at their own cost

Over the rainbow, under the bridge

Actually, such behaviour costs ordinary people. By taking money for doing sod all they contribute to the costs to the local authority which we all pay for via council tax and social housing rental.

I'd be out asking when they would be likely to complete the job.

If really concerned they were taking the piss I'd be on the phone to the council/company employing them.

That's the point, supposed to be working not sat in the van brewing up for 2 hours. If they got the job finished, they go home early and happy days.

The reason I was annoyed at them, is because once they have gone, I can take of the clear plastic sheeting on my windows and give them a right good cleaning.

That 2 hour delay means I have less to do that, then grab a shit, shave and shower and then grab something to eat... all before 4pm. I'm meeting a friend in the pub at 5.

Ah i see so even though the sheeting has been there for a while its a matter of life and death for you to remove today, couldnt possibly wait until tomorrow morning when they will be long gone and youve had your night out, your not going to try and cram a months xmas shopping in today as well so you can get really stressed are you?

Yes I can actually say that. I eat both breakfast and dinner at my desk. And no that is not an exaggeration.

I also work again once I get home.

However, that is utterly irrelevant. 2 hours is not an extended break. It is taking the piss.

Rather exaggerated argument really. They are there to do a job. Their time is being paid for and they've sat on their arse for two hours. That makes a mockery of the Christmas spirit and is clearly inconveniencing the op.

Ps those on the Burma railway were POWs being used as slave labour. My uncle was one of them. So really not relevant to this issue.

Chimney sweeps were often abused children. Again they cannot be a relevant comparison.

These are grown men being paid to do a job who are skiving.

There getting a set amount of money to do a job how long it takes them unless it's stipulated by contract is up to them!.

There could be loads of reasons there sat in the van.

There next job could be in 4 hours time.

They might not have the correct equipment to dismantle.

They might not have the right amount of harnesses or someone with a ticket (not all the scaffolders will have a ticket).

When it's all said and done they won't be getting paid to sit in there anyhow and as a last resort have you considered........

Knocking on the van window and having a polite conversation about time and telling them your plans to clean windows. After all their scaffolders not mind readers

But if they have no good reason I would be making a complaint. Having had workmen cost me a lot of money in the past I have little patience with skiving.

I've got a funny feeling there'll have a good reason as no one in their right mind would want to sit in a van for two hours getting bored when they could be somewhere else.

Skiving is when your getting out of doing a job, they are going to take it down some time or another and knowing a feel scaffolders like I do I'd bet you a tenner there'd rather be taking it down and be in the pub for 3 than waiting around then taking it down and not going to the pub till 5

I caught workmen skiving in my house instead of fitting my kitchen. In an entire day they fitted three plug sockets. They did, however, leave filthy marks all over my suite and cream rug in the lounge which they should never have been in.

Another workman who was replacing a kitchen window in a council house I used to live in sat in his van reading the paper having left broken glass all over my kitchen (I had a toddler at the time). A quick call to the depot told me he should have cleaned up and been on another job as the woman in question had been waiting in for him.

When workmen are paid by the day or charge by the day it can be in their financial interest to drag a job out.

My plumber charges a fair whack daily but I always ask him back as he doesn't take the mick, arrives early, works solidly and if he can only do half a day he only charges for half a day.

I've never employed anyone on a day rate and being a gas engineer I've never been employed on a day rate.

I've priced for jobs that took longer to do than thought and not made any money on it and I've priced for jobs that took a lot less time and made decent money. Occasionally I've rebated the customer and occasionally they've given me a little more knowing it had gone over schedule.

It's like any other industry there's good and there's bad and a whole load in between but usually a nice but firm attitude always out does a not so good attitude
