Third thread on this and the others died - so I'll wish everyone a happy solar new year on this one too.

I don't believe the sun is being born again, but I do think it's an auspicious day, it's the root of our christmas celebrations, in addition to it's astronomical significance.

For us, the significance of the winter solstice is that it signifies a time for reflection and joy as we look forward to the new year and sunlight returning to Mother Earth.

The Christian church built its traditions and celebratory calendar around the pagan one in order to minimise resistance in times gone by so they celebrate the birth of Christ at this time of year.

The shame is that in modern times, the commercial and retail industries have taken the tradition of exchanging gifts and partying to the extreme and have turned this whole time of year into one huge materialistic bonanza.

Some lovely posts by some obviously fab people on this thread. I wish we could all organise a party to celebrate. our traditional feast days.

The sun metaphorically dies and is hence the root of numerous born again stories which are present in a lot of religions.

But thanks for the contributions I enjoyed reading them xxx
