It is overrated...on this side of the Channel as what is exported from France to supermarkets in the Uk is far to be the best of the production.

Have a taste of a real one if you're in France (or go to a fine wine shop) and you'll see the difference!

No one likes everything so some people will not like Champagne or sparkling wines.

I was given a bottle for my 50th and I enjoyed that one. I usually prefer a sparkling Rose or Cava. I was given a bottle of Creme de Cassis a few years ago and that was nice on Champagne.

There are some very smooth champagnes, the trouble is the biggest brand names are not the best value or the most mellow, you have to taste a bunch to find one to your palate, they vary so much.

Agreed am not a fan of the Brut champagne.

There are 2 types of champagne, 'brut' which I don't like and 'Demi-sec' (half dry) which I prefer because of its sweeter taste and I rarely see it in shops in the UK.

A way of sweetening the Brut champagne is to add some 'crème de cassis' which is called a Kir Royal in France. You can also do that with a dry white wine and call it a 'Kir'.

I think it's like most drinks, until you've had a really nice one it's perhaps not to everyone's tastes. A nice 2004 vintage from a good champagne house is so smooth, or for the sweet toothed a quality Demi sec

I have a bottle of Moët that my dad bought when I was born... It's erm verging on 60 yrs old ... I love it it takes pride of place on a shelf... I suspect it would be un-drinkable... Not that I'd ever contemplate opening it!

Sometimes I drink it when I'm alone. When I have company I consider it obligatory.

I trifle with it if I'm not hungry and drink it when I am.

Otherwise I never touch it - unless I'm thirsty.

The only differences between cava and champagne is the region where it is made and the type of grape. They are both made using the champenoise method of adding yeast through the cork with a needle to cause the extra fermantation and give off the required CO2 bubble that are absorbed to make it fizzy.

My opinion is that champagne is not at all over rated, over priced at times maybebut as with all wine, this can be the case.

I love them both.

You were right pointing out that it is the same production method, but you were also right saying that it doesn't come from the same grapes. And it makes a huge difference in taste!

I think Champagne is over priced you can get a reasonable Cava for around £10 a Champagne of a similar standard would be above £30.

That's not to say Champagne or Cava or better than the other just price and quality are very different at the mid to lower end for each.

We used to walk round to an 'uncle's' place for champagne cocktails on Christmas morning - few drops of angostura bitters onto a sugar cube, a dash of brandy, top up with champagne - a couple of those on an empty stomach and you're dancing home to get the turkey out the oven!!Yum!!

To be honest I wouldn't mind getting my hands on a really good English sparkling wine, seeing as our weather is getting better. Most of the grapes are grown on chalk, just like Champagne, and as it was an English person who discovered the way it became sparkling, I reckon we should go back to our origins.

Unfortunately their prices are commensurate to Champagne, but there's only one of me.
