"It's heartening to read so many non, or low level drinkers exist. Well done everyone X Yes give yourselves a big pat on the back." There's no need to be like that. I was merely saying it's a good thing people don't feel the need to drink all the time.

"Hardly drink these days and usually do the driving Even if I do drink I will only have a couple What I really dislike is other people who aren't comfortable with you not drinking ' go on have another' 'party pooper' etc type remarks " You just need to hang around the forum then as the people that like to have a drink are apparently the lepers and those that don't are to be congratulated.

"It's heartening to read so many non, or low level drinkers exist. Well done everyone X Why is it? And why do people need praising because they don't drink? It's not like they've done anything remarkable is it?" For some it IS quite remarkable. For someone who has d*unk for years, giving up often isn't easy. For a few years I had a driver who had been an alcoholic, had signed the pledge and went on to run AA meetings. Even after 10 years sober, he struggled every day.

"Most of this year i haven't really d*unk any alcohol, but i find it very hard to go to stuff like christmas parties and not drink, and had my first drink for about 3 months last night at a christmas party, but feel dog rough today. Yes, I rarely drink and only have one or two maximum. People have an odd relationship with alcohol in this country and seem to think they need it to relax and have a good time. People getting d*unk at sex parties for example is a horrible experience, and often leads to people turning into massive arseholes. Basically d*unk people are awful, and think they're fantastic. Alcohol turns people into idiots." I feel when people are d*unk ya see the real person! The barriers are down so to speak and the real persona is on show ....

I was alluding to my own earlier comments about alcohol being directly linked to having a good time, going out, gigs etc. You even said "drinking is almost expected" which is the thing I have an issue with. Nothing personal.

I mean why should other people's behavioural patterns dictate what it means to have a good time? I used to be a big drinker, and a lot of people I still know are big drinkers when it comes to socialising, but that doesn't mean I have to do the same thing. If it's not an issue, then why do you 'have to deny yourself a drink?'

No, it's not a problem. I've never needed to drink to fit in, didn't even mention that so I don't know why you're suggesting it's what I said. It's also none of your business why I'm not currently drinking.

"The drinkers get massively defensive over this. I just said I think it's a shame people feel the need to drink to have a good time. It's a cultural issue, binge drinking and pub culture is unhealthy and d*unk people are often badly behaved and anti social. That's what I have a problem with. "I can happily go without and happily over indulge How dare you.? You either have to abstain or be caught up in some drinking culture whereby you have to get pissed to have fun! Didn't you know? ?" k wise words. Where is the fun in a happy medium? No story there.... Polarisation of approach is far easier for the lazy of thought to understand and place people in easily labelled boxes.... I have had a drink most days this year. Work, dinners, concerts, hockey, rugby, cricket, tennis. Most events seem to provide some capacity for the consumption of alcohol. A shared activity followed by, or containing a social drink. A routine followed globally for millenia. Alcohol as part of a shared experience. Do I need to drink? No. Do I judge those who chose not to drink? No. Do I want to be like those people on here who don't drink but appear to need to feel better about themselves with their sweeping generalisations about those who do enjoy a drink? I don't think I need to answer that.

"I can happily go without and happily over indulge How dare you.? You either have to abstain or be caught up in some drinking culture whereby you have to get pissed to have fun! Didn't you know? ?k wise words. " FFS you've just called the thread stone dead with that well thought rational post. Get out!

"If someone really can't go without alcohol, I would suggest they have a problem. " they have a problem whenever their consumption of alcohol has an adverse impact on themselves or anyone around them.

"no problem just don't get between me and the tea pot " Funnily enough I worked with a man who had a teapot on his desk every afternoon after lunch. The only thing was that the teapot was full of Sancerre. Everybody knew this,, but social niceties were preserved, and he was very good at his job...

"If someone really can't go without alcohol, I would suggest they have a problem. But nobody is saying they can't go without. ...just being looked down upon because they do." I don't drink at all and I don't feel as though I'm being scorned for it. On the contrary, I struggle to understand why so many people feel they need to drink or justify why they do.

Alcohol turns people into idiots." Pretty much my feeling although some people are better than others when d*unk.

"I don't feel the need to drink to have a good time. I drink because I like the taste of it I'm with you there, I do enjoy my wine " I like a glass or 2 of wine or a couple of beers, but I never get pissed. I had a hangover for an entire day a few years ago and felt absolutely dreadful, never again!
