Most of this year i haven't really d*unk any alcohol, but i find it very hard to go to stuff like christmas parties and not drink, and had my first drink for about 3 months last night at a christmas party, but feel dog rough today.

Yes, I rarely drink and only have one or two maximum. People have an odd relationship with alcohol in this country and seem to think they need it to relax and have a good time.

People getting d*unk at sex parties for example is a horrible experience, and often leads to people turning into massive arseholes.

Basically d*unk people are awful, and think they're fantastic. Alcohol turns people into idiots.

Yep. I can't remember the last time I got d*unk, it's been that long. Not a conscious decision either, I'm just happy with a glass of wine rather than a bottle. I might be growing up.

I rarely drink as normally I end up being main childcare giver. Last christmas I didnt drink at all as my sons auntie got as d*unk she passed out and I took her wee boy for the night since everyone else had taken a fair amount of alcohol. Safe to say this year they are having a booze free christmas for the kiddies

I hardly ever drink and, when I do, it is normally in the tiniest of quantities.

Last night I think I managed a whole half a can of beer for the entire evening at Eureka's...

I stopped drinking as soon as i got pregnant, ended up a single parent (so skint and had to be the responsible one all the time) and never really bothered drinking again.

Got a new partner after a few years of being a single parent, used to drink on my birthdays and xmas while with him, but gave that up a few years ago. Had a big drug and booze binge for a few days a couple of years ago coz i was fed up, never touched either since. Can easily do without drink, sometimes really, really wanna get stoned though.

Think i'd rather avoid places where people get pissed rather than go there and be the only one sober.

You just need to hang around the forum then as the people that like to have a drink are apparently the lepers and those that don't are to be congratulated.

Well reading this thread you'd think it was impossible to just have a drink without losing the run of yourself and getting bladdered.

For some it IS quite remarkable. For someone who has d*unk for years, giving up often isn't easy.

For a few years I had a driver who had been an alcoholic, had signed the pledge and went on to run AA meetings. Even after 10 years sober, he struggled every day.

Got to be honest: me and my wife feel that we have a much better night when alcohol is involved - not necessarily copious amounts.

A lot depends on who you're with; the vast majority of our friends are drinkers and it just feels natural to drink as well.

Mind you, the hangovers definitely get worse with age. I had my work do on Friday and barely got out of bed yesterday because I was so rough.

Feeling the need, or at least being made to feel the need by your peers isn't a problem? I mean why should other people's behavioural patterns dictate what it means to have a good time? I used to be a big drinker, and a lot of people I still know are big drinkers when it comes to socialising, but that doesn't mean I have to do the same thing.

If it's not an issue, then why do you 'have to deny yourself a drink?'

It seems like you did mean it to be taken personally as you're still trying to make my lifestyle seem disgusting/abhorrent. No, it's not a problem. I've never needed to drink to fit in, didn't even mention that so I don't know why you're suggesting it's what I said.

"The drinkers get massively defensive over this. I just said I think it's a shame people feel the need to drink to have a good time.

It's a cultural issue, binge drinking and pub culture is unhealthy and d*unk people are often badly behaved and anti social. That's what I have a problem with.

I take issue with arrogant, condescending people using my words to highlight what's wrong with the world, when I've nothing to be ashamed of. You should have noticed I didn't have a problem with you being against drinking before you quoted me. Get off your high horse. "

OK. I don't have a problem with you personally. I'm not sure how many times I can say that

I do take issue with drinking culture in this country, and you mentioned it so I quoted you.

Again, not about you personally, but a comment about drinking culture as mentioned by you. I merely used you as a point of reference. I apologise if I made it in any way personal to you x

wise words. Where is the fun in a happy medium? No story there....

Polarisation of approach is far easier for the lazy of thought to understand and place people in easily labelled boxes....

I have had a drink most days this year. Work, dinners, concerts, hockey, rugby, cricket, tennis. Most events seem to provide some capacity for the consumption of alcohol. A shared activity followed by, or containing a social drink. A routine followed globally for millenia. Alcohol as part of a shared experience.

Do I need to drink? No.

Do I judge those who chose not to drink? No.

Do I want to be like those people on here who don't drink but appear to need to feel better about themselves with their sweeping generalisations about those who do enjoy a drink?

I don't think I need to answer that.

I don't drink alcohol. I can't stand the taste of beer, don't like wine apart from mulled and spirits are far too strong, they taste like paint stripper.

I have the very odd drink, if I'm on holiday or at Christmas. I will only have one though as I prefer fruit juices.

I don't like the effect alcohol has on others, I don't really talk to those who become loud and lairy, unfocused eyes etc.

I wouldn't say I was totally teetotal as I had a drink at last NYE....but it ouldnt bother me if drink was not available.

What bothers me is the amount of people who think I am strange because I don't always drink when out and try and get me to "try " it.

What they fail to understand is, I tried it and didn't like most of it....I also don't need drink to enjoy myself

Alcohol turns people into idiots."

Pretty much my feeling although some people are better than others when d*unk.

I've just this minute had my first drink since august. I didn't stop because I particularly wanted to just that it would benefit me more on my healthy eating and exercise kick.

So I've treated myself to a bottle of JD for the Xmas week and it'll be gone by end of Boxing Day then that'll be me back on the wagon again.
