Two NYPD cops were shot when a suspect ambushed them as they sat in a patrol car in Brooklyn on Saturday afternoon, police sources and witnesses said.

The shooting took place outside of the Tompkins Houses, near Myrtle Ave. and Tompkins Ave. in Bedford-Stuyvesant, about 3 p.m., cop sources said.

“The perp came out of the houses, walked up behind the car and lit them up,” a high-ranking police official told the Daily News.

Maybe because people who tend to support the police also tend to be law abiding citizens.

Also, while in my opinion just as wrong or even more so, a criminal killing a police officer is not as frightening to the public as a police officer killing a citizen; especially if that citizen turns out to an innocent citizen.

"It sounds like a gang land assassination, and with the amount of corruption in the US Police department it certainly wouldn't be surprising!"

From the reports I've seen this is more likely to be another nutcase on the loose with a gun and a grudge than a gang land assassination. It seems that he'd shot his girlfriend earlier in the day. Also, allegedly, he killed himself afterwards - not a hallmark of a gangland assassin.

It seems just another sad, mad incident, perhaps a tiny bit like the murder of an off duty policeman in Liverpool on Friday.

By 'US police department' did you mean NYPD?

A fascinating assertion. I would love to understand the premiss on which the corruption assertion has been made.

Google Michael Brown robs old man to find out what a law abiding upstanding citizen he was.

It's a very tough job being a policeman. It's a job I wouldn't like to do but I'm thankful that people choose to do it. And whilst there are undoubtably dreadful cases of the odd rouge officer I do believe most of them are there for the right reasons.

Michael Brown didn't deserve to be shot , but he was definitely a wrong un.

Not from the reports I've read. From what I've gathered some nut shot his girlfriend, travelled 190 miles from his home, shot the policemen and himself.

Does that really sound like a gangland killing to you?

If, as has been reported, he shot his girlfriend, two coppers and then himself, why wantonly target two police with whom he had no 'beef'? Perhaps he was, after all, influenced by the media coverage of the killings by the police I made mention of.

Or perhaps he had had previous problems with the police? Who knows?

And when you say I should do my research, what about you? You don't think there is much corruption in the American police? Really? Ever heard of the Serpico case? Or that loads of police were involved in drug dealing, a la American Gangster film? Huge numbers were implicated by Frank Lines

yep.... anyone who quotes fox news is asking not to be taken seriously.... because it is one up from the comedy channel....

and the new york post is the american equivilant of "the sun" and famously got the the 2 suspects in the boston bombings names wrong.... cause grief to those people and never apologising for it.....

so if it was in retaliation for eric garner.... why did he person (who was clearly unstable) kill his girlfriend first a few hours earlier.....

was that in retaliation for something as well???

actually... i bet fox news will say that was in retaliation for benghazi and obamacare...and obama in general... which obviously failed this individual

Police are under threat from retaliatory action from black gangs. This is no secret. The brother of my work colleague in Cleveland, Ohio is a County Sherriff and he and his colleagues have been advised to wear their vest on and off duty for the foreseeable future.

Nobody is denying that. What we appear to have here is a scenario where somebody committed murder and in some bizarre offset exercise thought he would validate himself by

Subsequently killing 2 police officers.

I find it hard to believe that he would have committed the latter murders if he had not already killed his partner. So his primary motivation wasn't revenge for alleged misconduct by the police but an attempt to feel a little better about the lives he had already wasted, both his, and his partners.

Police officers are seen as a figurehead for authority or a shop front window for Law and the way things are.

Those suffering or feeling injustice or as is most of the time, mental health, very often want to vent that anger or pain or express it. Very often officers are the only easily available contact they have with authority.

No reasonable argument can suggest that this perpetrator wasn't mentally ill, and whilst there may be links to previous incidents of discontent, the sad fact is that this was a terrible murder committed by a very sick man.

I will elaborate and see if that helps.

It all depends on when he updated his status.

If his partner had already been murdered by him at that point he wrote that, he is operating from a different position than if she was still alive and well.

If dead, he is already a murderer and will consequently have far less to lose than he had before he killed his partner. So his _iew of the world will have changed.

The act of murdering your partner is pretty morally indefensible. But if you can commit another act that relates to a perceived injustice from the state then you raise your status from small time killer to vigilante hero, right? I don't know what was going on in the head of this individual. None of us can. I am just asserting that without a dead partner I don't think he finds himself in a position where murdering police officers is on his itinerary for the day.

ergo, the timing of events is crucial. Cause and effect.

I think she is still alive, it's reported that she was shot and wounded. Her mother alerted the police after seeing his IG updates. It hasn't been reported why he initially shot her.

Also, he had made several IG updates with anti-police remarks in the weeks leading up to the incident.

Well if karma is true lets hope a similar thing happens in a houe in armthorpe!!!!

Not really i wouldnt wish this on anyone but really what a despicable thing to say.

In the main police do a brilliant job making our streets safer for us and yes there are bad police, but there are also bad doctors nurses bishops priests and the list goes on but few others recieve the abuse and critisism the police receive, the catholic have employed some of the most vile child molesters as priests but we do not see news of people killing other priests in retaliation and if we did there would be an outcry.

Just googled: Fox news and The New York Post are saying that the killings were in retaliation to the Brown and Garner killings by the police.

Care to comment?

yep.... anyone who quotes fox news is asking not to be taken seriously.... because it is one up from the comedy channel....

and the new york post is the american equivilant of "the sun" and famously got the the 2 suspects in the boston bombings names wrong.... cause grief to those people and never apologising for it.....

so if it was in retaliation for eric garner.... why did he person (who was clearly unstable) kill his girlfriend first a few hours earlier.....

was that in retaliation for something as well???

actually... i bet fox news will say that was in retaliation for benghazi and obamacare...and obama in general... which obviously failed this individual

(obviously... the last paragraph is flippant)"

Your whole post was flippant.

Not good

Apart from the fact that the New York Post and Fox News were correct in their reporting.

And I assume the bit about benghazi and obamacare were flippant. As the poster admitted, the last paragraph was too

I don't think, therefore, it was a well balanced post at all

"Retaliation over the deaths perpetrated by police in America recently, perhaps?

Is that what you really think?

I would suggest you do a little more research before making a post of this nature. It landed with me as being simultaneously glib and sanctimonious. It really does you no favours.

I never did hear an apology for your post.

I was right, after all, wasn't I? "

lets take what was said at the police briefing yesterday about the person who did this.....

I'll take a more credible source than "fox news" and "new york post" if you don't mind....

"NEW YORK (AP) — The gunman who fatally ambushed two police officers in their squad car had a long criminal record, a hatred for police and the government and an apparent history of mental instability that included an attempt to hang himself a year ago, authorities said Sunday.

Moments before opening fire, Ismaaiyl Brinsley approached people on the street and asked them to follow him on Instagram, then told them, "Watch what I'm going to do," Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce said.

A portrait of the Brooklyn-born gunman emerged as big-city police departments and union leaders around the country warned officers to change up their routines and insist on extra backup a day after Brinsley carried out what he portrayed online as retaliation for the slayings of black men at the hands of white police.

Brinsley was black; the slain officers were Asian and Hispanic.

Investigators were trying to determine if Brinsley had taken part in any protests over the deaths of Michael Brown and Eric Garner, whose names he invoked in his online threat, or simply latched on to the cause for the final act in a violent rampage.

They said he traveled frequently between the South and New York, where he fathered a child in Brooklyn, and had been in the city earlier in the week.

Brinsley, 28, had at least 19 arrests in Georgia and Ohio, spent two years in prison for gun possession and had a troubled childhood so violent that his mother was afraid of him, police said. He ranted online about police and the government and expressed "self-despair and anger at himself and where his life was," Boyce said.

Boyce said Brinsley's mother believed he had undiagnosed mental problems and may have been on medication at some point, but detectives were still trying to determine if he had a mental illness.

...................................................................

mental illness.... and sounds like he latched onto brown and garner to justify what he was doing......

And the media will latch on to that for obvious reasons.

It's tragic on so many levels.

But America's utterly ridiculous gunlaws mean that people get shot daily and don't ever make the news. And inevitably this won't change that. Nut the continual linking of this to Garner and Brown will potnetially make an already explosive situation even worse

Looks like the BlackLivesMatter movement has a new mascot for the news to build its propaganda from and further justify the unlawful murders of innocent black people.

this.... and the reality is, is that the person who did this probably shared more in common with the shooter (jared loughner) of congressman gabby gifford at the political open event in arionza,

or the shooter at sandy hook elementry school in newtown (adam lanza)...

or the shooter at the cinema in aurora, colorado (james holmes) in that they used social media to justify and glorify what they were going to do.... and they were all mentally unstable

it this helps have a civilised conversation about the relationship between the communities and the police, because like i said, most cops do a brilliant job.... then i think a conversation about how that can be made better is useful...

for the head of the new york police union to say there is "blood on the hands of the mayor, and on the hands of the peaceful protesters speaking and marching out of the Eric Garner decision" isn't helping the conversation and is inflamatory....

The thing that struck me the most was the utter hypocrisy of the "Rev" Al Sharpton (sp?) when he said "People shouldn't use the name of Garner or Brown as a reason for violence."

Wasn't he advocating precisely that at the time of the recent Missouri riots?

Will it ever end?

I have wondered why he is making such inflammatory comments. If there is a protest now, on any side, it is unlikely to be peaceful.

"Looks like the BlackLivesMatter movement has a new mascot for the news to build its propaganda from and further justify the unlawful murders of innocent black people.

"

Isn't the official statistic that 92% of blacks homicides are perpetrated by blacks themselves.

Reducing that figure, indeed reducing it to zero, would be a good start.

The perp said it was because white cops killed black men. Strange how he shot a Mexican and a Chinese cop!

Where did you read that?

I saw he may be affiliated to the BGF gang who have said they would target white police officers, but nothing directly said by Brinsley.

Are you sure everyone will be able to overlook that? Some would have us believe the figure is already zero.

And with statements and attitudes such as this its no wonder the killings go on.

As with any police force the US have good and bad, the majority being good.

Just like the general populous there are good and bad and again the bad are in a minority just lucky we have found the area where you reside and heres a hint....its the opposite of good!

How you can possibly believe that anyone deserves to be executed just because of who or what they are says far about you and the sort of person you are than anything you could put on your profile. I really hope I never have the mis fortune of meeting you personally.
