What do you ladies use? I'm on the depo injection, but the migraines that I get from it are quite bad. I've had the implant before but I fell pregnant on that one, so not really keen to try that again!

Pill would be a no go as I'm rubbish at minding to take tablets, so does that just leave the coil??

I decided to have surgical sterilisation and I also use condoms. It works for me.

I had my last depo injection about three months ago, didn't have any major side effects, just decided I didn't want to keep taking it as well as my everyday medication. Now I just use condoms.

No I think there's a copper coil too, a friend has something like that. They're inserted very high up, it's possible that a big guy may be able to feel the wires but they won't damage him in any way and there's no risk of it being pulled out

Mirena secretes hormones which copper coils don't.

Don't listen to the horror stories, there will always be a few but they are in the minority.

I had an implant in my arm and found that my periods were all over the place.

I've heard that contraceptive injections can affect fertility if you keep having them over time. I dont want any more children but didn't fancy the idea of injections.

I had a merena coil nearly 3 years ago and only had one (very light) period in all of that time

. It lasts for five years and was just like having a smear. Its the same hormone as the pill I was on but I was always forgetting to take the damn pill and got pregnant

. The merena coil is the same hormone as the pill but in a much smaller dose as its localised "down there". Best thing I ever did and hubby is well chuffed too

I have the mirena coil plus i use condoms. Mr has had a vasectomy but also uses condoms..

The mirena has been a god send. I'm in my tenth year of having them. I still get periods but much lighter than before.

I fell pregnant on the pill, wouldn't like the implant and not overly keen on the coil. Only just had my last injection a week ago so I guess I will have to see how the headaches are in the next couple of months.

I got *very* ill on the depo injections. They were great for over a year, then I started getting quite a few bad headaches, then I had a constant, heavy period that lasted over a year (cue anemia etc). Because they can't get the chemical out of your body once it's in, any poor reactions you have will last at least three or six months. Potentially more.

Ive had the implant since i was 20 & only time i had a prob was when the dr didnt actually put it in!

I have one now but panic everytime i get pain in my shoulder which i currently do now and i automatically think im having an ectopic! :/ leaves you slightly paranoid even when i use condoms too

Yeah, I was advised by the sexual health clinic and my GP that I wasn't a good candidate for the coil. The NHS in my area used to pay for the smaller version of the coil that was used for petite women or women who have not had children, then they took away the funding for it. So I could either go private or face absolute agony during fitting and possible later complications if I had the standard size one fitted. Didn't fancy that.

I mean that the bleed is so light that it just ends up looking a bit pink when I go to the bathroom (sorry guys). For the first two years I didn't bleed at all, and it barely bothers me now

Oh i had the injection too but as i have a problem with my knee they advised me to come as it can cause oestoporosis later in life i was told.. Whether thats changed i dont know

Hmm. I'd have to disagree. My ex punctured his penis on the 'threads' of my coil. He wasn't best impressed.

Also, having not had children it was AGONY having it put in.

Yep i nearly died with the mirena. Burst through my womb and had to have a two hour operation to remove five litres of pus. Seven days in hospital. 16 months on and still having leaking from the infection and now opted to have my tubes removed as they are full of pus.

Copper coil here, the hormones in the mirena don't agree with me. My periods were slightly heavier for the first couple after fitting and then they settled back down again.

No problems since and noone has ever bumped into the threads.

I still use condoms to avoid sti's as well.

OP, there are good and bad views on every type of contraception, all you can do is what's best for you.

I had the same heavy bleeding problem as somebody above, bled terribly for months at a time, and the coil has solved my problem. So when this one comes out I'll get another.

It may be suitable for you, it might not. Can only give it a try

Yeah was the implant I fell pregnant on. Think I'll try the coil see what it's like, if I don't like it can easily take it out, just have to wait until February as that's when I'm due my next injection

I used to be on the injection years ago but eventually had menopause symptoms which my quack said was probably due to not having had a period in about 5 years and like the OP I'm shit with remembering to take the pill (although I was on it from 16 to about 30)....don't fancy a coil so I use condoms for contraception as well as safer sex...I don't even know if I'm fertile to be fair seeing as I've never been pregnant so I'm happy with the condoms

I originally started with the copper coil but my body just didn't like it. Changed to the Merena coil was the best thing I ever did. It regulated my periods as well. But two years ago they stopped altogether not that I am complaining lol x

I'm in this dilemma atm. Fell pregnant on the pill and now that little one is here I'm looking for a new contraception but I don't want anything that stops your periods altogether. I was put off of the depo by the mere mention that you may have trouble conceiving in future.

You still have regular(-ish) periods with the copper coil?

I'm not on anything now as very low chance of me falling pregnant without medical intervention so use nothing with Paul and condoms with meets.

However I used to be on the implant, it was horrific gave me terrible mood swings I turned totally loopy and I had a constant sludgy period. My dr kept saying give it time in the end I went to a clinic in a different town to get it out.

I went totally loopy on the implant too, and I was violent enough before!!! The implant made me insane. Had the coil and it dislodged. Having it put in was agonising and even worse when she spent almost an hour poking around to refit the dislodged one. In the end she gave up (blood everywhere blurgh). But I did love the coil. Pills give me moodswings so I'm just on condoms x

They actually changed it from the first ones as a few people did get caught but no contraception is 100% unless it's sterilization x

I use the implant and am on the pill to regulate my cycle x use condoms as well

You can get pregnant on any form of contraception. Nothing is 100% effective.

Sterilization isn't 100%, there's still a chance I can get pregnant. Hence why I also use condoms.

The only way of guaranteeing no pregnancy is to have either your ovaries or your uterus removed. Or don't have sex.

I had the merina and bled from the day that put it in until a year of begging they took it out. Works for some. Thsnk god for the menopause

I had coil fitted in August new one that is smaller but is copper and since I get really heavy periods. Before I had it fitted I had no period pain and was only on for 3 days. now I get bad cramps n moody lol and really heavy for 7 days.

wud recommend it as safe but dont like these periods at all.... keeping it for another 3-6mths as takes time to settle.

Didnt want to be sterilised yet as too big a decision that is irreversible once done and feel im still too young to make that decision!!!

Pill not suitable for me as had migraines and other problems over the years with the pill.

Every woman.is different and its a choice all us women have to make so stop us getting pregnant or just for hormonal reasons
