You'll notice a lot of news reports reminding us of that terrible day. Im watching one now.

10 years ago! I had never heard of one before and couldnt quite believe what I was watching.

It was probably the first video/s I ever watched on youtube. Those people effected that day will never have a normal Christmas Day. Parents who couldnt grab both their kids - jeeeez.

I love nature and what it can do but absolutley hate Tsunami's.

There are a few natural disasters that are permanently etched in my memory. This was one of the worst. Thanks for the reminder of the anniversary

I'd never heard of one either. Watching the videos and hearing the stories of what those poor people went through was horrific and unbelievable.

Living on the coast, seeing and hearing the sea every day is truly wonderful and I luv it, but the sea is a very dangerous and cruel place and that was it at its worst.

East Yorkshire

There was a programme on the other night about this with the survivors talking about how they've coped living with the aftermath of events. It was sad but inspirational at the same time. Worth checking out

There have been many days that changed the world but that was a seminal moment as it was probably the first natural disaster (or seemed to be) that received minute by minute viral coverage.

Nature is both beautiful and savage and we must always remember it.

Yeah that's crazy where time goes.

I watched an amazing documentary on it on itv about 4 years ago where people were recounting what they were doing on holiday and it was all interlaced with video footage and the last 20 minutes were very poignant where you realised that one of the couples who were telling their story had lost their daughter.

On another note I saw a documentary about the actual earthquake and never realised how big it was, they actually went down on the sea bed in a submarine and showed you this 50'high 100 mile long shelf that had just been ripped apart, it was quite staggering and something I never really thought of

I can hear the noises of the people screaming like they are on a fairground ride and still not quite realising whats just hit them and it still about to.

A quarter of a million people died in this natural disaster.

I also remember watching it moving inland, far from the coast, houses just falling over into that dirty black water just full of trees and cars etc.

And don't forget the Japanese one only the years ago. Totally shocking which actually came with a warning because they got a system in place after the boxing day one

I remember that one for other reasons. I turned the TV on and the cameramen were in helicopters giving us a live birds eye view. Again just as tragic.

You always have to try and take a positive where able I think and warning systems is one I suppose.

It was crazy watching the water wash around streets with high rise blocks with the Japanese Tsunami rather than just open ground

Yes I remember watching it live on the news too. And even though they had a warning Japan was devastated for a year not to even mention the ongoing catastrophe which is Fukushima

It was the first that really got well publicised over here, crazy it's been 10 years....

My very good friend was over in Thailand at the time, luckily had a fortunately placed house and was safe, but the hours of not knowing we're horrible. A good reminder to appreciate things, which I think we all need from time to time.

I will never shake the front page image of a mother running down the beach, arms outstretched, her two small children running up the beach towards her.....a 40ft wall of water behind them

That is the power of a mother's love

It affected me for months after like no other image in my lifetime

There but for good fortune go I....

...

The start of it actually fascinated people so much it drew them in to their deaths, if most people had recognised it for what was coming their would have been plenty of time to get to high ground
