It saddens me to think that text speak is beginning to be included into the Oxford English. I totally agree with you.

Over the rainbow, under the bridge

John McWhorter makes a good argument about the subtlety and sophistication of texting.

One thing which makes English such a wonderful and long - lived language is the nature of how it evolves.

I do, however, believe all should learn and know Standard English as this is what people are judged on in application letters, interviews, etc. No one should be excluded simply because they do not have a handle on their own mother tongue.

That said, on forums, IMs, and other digital communications, a less formal approach is acceptable. But excessive text speak can actually hamper communication.

If we wish to communicate effectively online clarity is essential.

The OP, is surely being ironic...it's English. And it's not a case of 'going to school', that doesn't mean you'll learn standard language skills.

Sadly though, overall I agree, in the sense that language or at least messaging on here is crap.

And 'LOL' is just created from online speak, hate it...

English is truly a marvel due to both the ever evolving nature of the language and the wondrous and still more fascinating etimology. What we cannot yet comprehend is that some people actually say "LOL". It appears that we are not too far away from the book of Dave!

Language evolves constantly - we no longer verily hath jolly japes, which were spiffing daddio, but then they became wicked bad, and now they're just sick.

Goodbye is "text" speak of its day for "God be with you" - "Hello" was "hail to you". It's all pants (pantaloons) unless you move with the five and dimes.

English is a hybrid language which over the last 800 years has evolved to what it is today. It will continue to evolve and will be totally different in 800 years.

I think a lot are underestimated in their ability many use text speech as they are on a mobile device or not the best typist so its quicker. Personally I don't think it matters too much as long as you can understand someone.
