Saying goodbye to a pet.

Bedworth

My mum just rang me to tell me that she's taking my old cat to the vet tomorrow and she thinks it's time to let her go.

Maxie is nearly 21 and a wonderful old girl. She has had tooth problems for a few years and an anesthetic to fix it isn't viable at her age. A tooth fell out on Monday and she has been eating less and less. She hasn't eaten anything for over 24 hours now.

We're all heartbroken that the time has come to say goodbye but we can't see her suffer. My dad is so upset that he can't bring himself to go.

When I bought that tiny, skinny little kitten from a pet shop all those years ago, we never imagined that she would bring us so much joy for so many years.

Putting the 'cum' in Eboracum

I hate it when my cats move on. But I'd rather have the joy of my cats and suffer the consequences than not have pets at all.

Away with the fairies (Liverpool to you)

It's heartbreaking when you know it's time to say goodbye but you have all your happy memories and they will stay with you forever......

We had to have our 17 year old cat put to sleep this time last year. It's so sad losing a pet, they do become one of the family.

How sad, sounds like kitty's, led a happy, contented, life. Something to be proud of... Not much consolation, I know. Made me well up this thread, I'm a soft git underneath!

Love to all concerned! X

we lost our last pet a few weeks ago - felt like the end of an era as definitely having no more - they become part of the family and im glad that when the time comes we can choose the peaceful way out for them - our bunny fell asleep in my arms whilst i was talking to my daughter whose pet it was - telling her she was almost gone - thinking of you x

I know just how hard it is, have lots a couple of cats in the past 2 years and I have gone to bits both times. But I still think of them all the time and remember the joy they brought, so think of the good times and remember yours as the bunlde of fun causing chaos and take comfort that you gave it a wonderful life.

Lost one 6 moths ago, and her sister last week - 21 years old. Heart breaking at the time but knowing how much love they had & a loving home helped to ease the pain. Seems so unfair that they leave us after such a comparatively short time. Thoughts are with you

i got the phonecall to take my family pet for its turn heartbroken i was and was fine until they started to talk about things and that did it had to walk out of room just couldnt face it

then phoned round see if we could get another family pet again, couldnt find one for long enough

hes a swine, bossy, lovable even cuddles into you

best thing for us was to get another straight away and would do so again you dont forget the family pet but if you get a kitten or a puppy you are a little busy and saves the house feeling so empty

Our sympathy. We lost our boy in august and was utterly devastated. Still miss him loads.

He was only 4. Do cannot imagine how upset you must be 21years is a long time.

Best wishes and hugs from fellow cat lovers

Xx

Hold her as she goes to sleep and find a nice spot in your mums garden for her. I lost one of my cats last month and I was glad I was with her when the vet put her to sleep, she's in her favourite spot in the garden which took some digging out but I'm glad she's there

not far from iceland,,,,,, tescos is nearer though :-) (near leeds)

I do hope that the vet finds it's an infection and its treatable, if you find its not It's never an easy decision to make even when we know it's for the best, I had my last pet put to sleep 5 years ago her memory lives on in my heart. hugs to you and your family

It is tough. The lovely forumites boosted my spirits 2 months ago when I had to make the same decision for my dog.

You have to put the cat first. It is horrible, but it is the greatest act of kindness you can perform. My thoughts are with you x

Our dog went in may, she is still missed terribly and the kids still talk about her all the time.. The greatest act of love you can give your pet is knowing when is the right time to say goodbye.. It may not feel like it a the time, but it is....we will eventually get another hound, but nothing will replace ever replace her....

Sorry to hear about your cat, pets really do become one of the family, especially after so many years.

You just have to think of the good life that they had with you.

Well, it turns out she had a large tumour developed in her mouth. It all happened very quickly, so was fine at her annual check up last month. I'm devastated that she's gone but know that saying goodbye was the right thing to do.

Goodbye my beautiful girl, I love you
