Meteor Shower tonight.

Britain will be treated to spectacular showers of up to 100 shooting stars a minute in the skies tonight.

The Geminid meteor shower will take place, with the peak time to see it being 2am, when the 'radiant', the point in the sky where the meteors appear to originate, is almost overhead, next to the Gemini constellation.

However, the meteors should be visible from around 10pm.

At their height, the Geminids could produce between 50 and 100 shooting stars every minute.

Was reading this on the net and Would be lovely to see. xx

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

I didn't see anything last night but I will stay up again and see if I can see anything tonight.

London has too much light so things don't always show up.

i have never seen these showers - have seen the odd shooting star though - will try tonight - seem to be more of these in recent years and wonder if its just due to technology/knowledge or something else

and i mean technology so we are more aware to look for them at daft o clock not that it makes more of them - cos that would be daft - just we missed them before as we never knew to look out

Maybe it's just a historical thing that's been going on for centuries. Or it's just an amazing natural wonder which no one will ever know the answer to

West Yorkshire

Just a few bits of info...

The rate is from 60-150 meteors per hour and not per minute as stated above. Ie. You'll spot one or two per minute on average although there will be spurts and lulls.

The shower is caused by the passing of Earth through the orbit of a tiny asteroid called 3200 Phaethon. The meteors are from the very small fragments left over the centuries along the orbit of the asteroid.

The best time to view is between midnight and 2 am though the moon will be up and will brighten the sky a little thereby rendering the fainter meteors a little harder to see.

Happy spotting folks

Tonight is also a great excuse for sex under the stars

I hope one wish was 'I wish I don't get run over!'

If the skies are clear, i will look out to sea - it's dark towards the south.

I set my alarm last night as the kids wanted to be woken up to have a look. They ended up just grunting at me and went back to sleep.

I managed to see one tho

Newcastle-under-Lyme

Spent about half an hour outside as the sky was clear. Took out chairs, double wrapped up warm, and blankets too. Mug of hot chocolate each.

We saw more than one a minute in that time, till the cloud came past. Just had to be patient and let eyes adjust, but there were plenty of bright and long meteors! Lovely show

Meteor showers are alot more common than people think and not just this time of year.

I don't think I've ever had a night under the stars and not seen at least one shooting star!.

The secret is to go somewhere dark and I don't mean you back garden, I mean somewhere really dark like a national park where you can't see your hand in front of your face, on a clear night with no moon the night sky is utterly amazing.
