When buying a service or product over the phone, motor insurance for example, are companies obliged to offer you other payment methods instead of the above,if requested by you, or is it completely at their discretion. ?

Dunno but I never go with one of those and use someone else if they insist.

Easiest way to get out of a CPA is to report your debit card lost and get a new one. CPA won't work as card details are different.

Actually I tried that but it doesn't work. The debit in question still left our account even though card number changed since it is linked to your bank account !!

Worked for me. I had several CPAs and not one was taken after I got a new card. Different if it's a direct debit though as that is account linked. CPAs are card linked, not account.

Can't you just go into your bank account and remove the direct debit payment? Sorry I can't help as never heard of CPA or how they work.

Continuous payment authorites are legal but, dependant of course upon the contract you entered into, you can terminate by notifying the company. If they do not respond, send a copy of your termination letter to your bank with a request that the payment is stopped.

They are insidious and most decent companies would not use them. You do not get the benefits that you gain from a direct debit which is easily cancelled.

The bank normally tell you that it can only be cancelled with the company, I had to claim I had lost my card as the company didn't take any notice.

I think the bank should cancel it but they said they don't.

They can and do it and promptly as well when you inform them you are changing banks with the 7 day transfer service. If your banks is not doing as you wish there is no reason to stick with them.

Most banks will cancel it especially if you say the company ignores you. A company is not obliged to agree other payment methods but generally will if they're reasonable methods. If needed, get advice from the government run Money Advice Service or Citizen's Advice

A cpa can easily be cancelled at you bank! U don't have to inform the company with which you set up the cpa. If money goes out of your account after you informed your bank, it's an illegal transaction and the bank will refund all the money. Ring the number on the back of your card though don't go into branch.

I have done this countless times.

I hate ultimatums and didn't want to swop so I just cancelled my card. Now I make sure if I buy something that they don't use CPA or have me down as opting out.

If you have given Direct Debit Authority( Given your Bank Account details) you can cancel it anytime you want. If you have given only your card details and you don't want them to use that card you can always cancel the card. Once you cancel the card no payment will be authorised.

Banks are now legally required to cancel a cpa if you request it. However if you cancel the debit card slone the money will still leave your account. Fact !!

However my question was are companies legally required to point out your payment options when making a purchase.?

Lots of banks are offering cash for new accounts, so an easier way to ditch cpa is to have a bank give you some cash for a new account and use that one for it, later on closing it before they try to get more cash.

I don't use brands that demand a cpa.

Mine didn't get any more money taken out, but then who knows whether they asked for it again. Saying that this was a long while ago so all things with banks could have changed by now with people complaining about it.

I don't know if they have to tell you, but I think they should.

Im sure they should. Sky do it now when you sign up. If your dd fails they use the card you signed up with. Pretty sure the insurance said the same.
