Physiologically-yes! They make the body release oxytocin, a calming, bonding hormone.

But not everyone wants a hug, some people just prefer to be left alone.

Depends who is hugging but I do believe in the power of human touch and hugs are a part of that.

If the hug is off the right person it can really help but again sometimes it's nice to just be left alone

Think we all do at times. Respecting a persons wishes is the order of any day. Enforced/unwelcome hugs make people feel worse.

Depends who's giving them and why. When I'm suffering with a bout of PTSD I just want everyone to bugger off and not speak to me. Trying to hug me is the last thing anyone should do.

Yes I agree cause then the person who doesn't want to hug doesn't want to hurt the feelings of the hug giver then ends up feeling worse than when they started

Depends....if I'm very emotional a well meaning hug will send me over the edge and I'll dissolve into tears.

If I'm down then a hug is a good pick me up.

I love hugging. I feel close to people I spend time with and it's good to share your connection by doing more than just sex. And if you do some of what I do then the person you are with will need care and attention

I also just love hugging

I think they definitely can make the hug giver and receiver feel better. Depends on the dynamics between them. Although when I'm ill, I generally prefer to be left alone , but when I'm sad - I like hugs. When someone runs into your arms for a hug, that's the best feeling in the world.

"Do hugs really make people feel better when they are really sad or ill? "

I guess it depends what is causing the person to feel sad ... and also what part of illness they are having to come to terms with

If I'm ill, I want everyone to F**k off and leave me alone

If I'm feeling a bit down a cwtch can work wonders

If it's a really sad occasion then I'd rather not have a cwtch as that would bring on the tears...or make them worse

Depends what you need and who's hugging. Can be calming, so will have a physical and psychological effect. Potentially great.
