I'd like to pick the collective's brain on this topic

. I'm thinking of getting a tattoo, but given the area of work I'm about to go into, it's really inappropriate.

It's made me consider getting a discreet one, rather than a full-arm/back job (which, to be honest, I don't think would suit me anyway).

Looking at areas I could do it, I'm most convinced by having it (a small insignia that means quite a lot to me) put on my achilles heel, or just above it. Good place for tattoo on a guy?

Whatever you have, make sure it's your choice and try to design it yourself. The people who regret tattos in later life are those that pick a small, easy, cheap design from a book or follow fashion (dolphins, stars, butterflies)and have it done by some chancer calling themselves artists. Today I had more ink done, 4 hours worth, by a really good artist who happens to be a mate. It hurt, it was not cheap, but it's worth it.

Go bold, but go careful.

Dont think it's good, or bad. Very few will ever see it, including yourself.

Hiding tattoos is one thing. Putting them somewhere they'll never be seen is another.

tatts are cool..as long as you don't get them on your face or hands or anywere that cant be hidden when the need be..such as work.. go for it..just make sure you choose a good tattoo artist..a friend of mine once got a panther tatt on his arm and it looked more like a hamster with big teeth..terrible..

If you dont mind me asking, what line of work? A lot of places are now much more accepting of tattoos as long as they are declared when you apply and non-offensive.

Mmm. It's a difficult one, I really can't have anything bold, it's occupational suicide.

The current area of choice, I agree, will only be seen when I'm barefoot, and even then only when I have my feet up or something. But I'm not too fussed about everyone seeing it. I'm not sure...

And the design I have in mind is totally unique.

Got a star design accross my foot... ouch worst pain av ever felt will never get another tattoo on my foot lol good luck lol

Have one on each back of my forearms and 2 on my back too

Be warned !!!

I think they are highly additive . Had one then wanted another and another ......

Be very careful of what you have is my advice . A d*unken weekend in Blackpool costs mega money when you decide you don't like the tattoo you had there . My cover up ended up costing almost £600.

Regarding the type of tattoo; this. I dont see any point in getting 'just something' that has no significant meaning.when I finally take the plunge (with a design a friend did) it will be something I know I won't regret down the line.

well if you are a policeman then I suggest you do not have '666' and 'millwall go fuck yourself' put on your forehead and hands..etc get something nice and discreet

Make enquiries with your employers HR,then you will know exactly what policy you have to work with.

Yeah, good advice haha.

What I have in mind is enormously meaningful to me, and as I said, very individual. I've mulled over having it done for a very long time now, a couple of years.

In terms of precisely where I want it on me though (achilles), and leaving issues of inconspicuousness aside, is it a cool place? I've been told by others it's a "girly place" to have it, whatever that means.

I had my first tattoo done on my thigh for my 49th birthday last year and added to it this birthday. I took years to pluck up the courage to have one and months to find exactly what I wanted but I designed it myself. I'm very lucky that we have a great tattooist locally who's very artistic.

The design means something to me and although not many people get to see it, I see it every day and I luv it.

Take time in deciding if, what and where and then once you're happy, go for it

There is a huge difference between a Tattooist and a Tattoo Artist...

My Tattooist was a Fine artist, then a medical tattooist (fake nipples, burns and scar stuff), now combines the art and the tattooing...

Most people good tattoos know much about the tattooist who did it.....another good starting point...

Achilles heel sounds painful. It will only be cool if it's a cool tattoo. I don't think I heart mum will be very cool

Yep, people say it's one of the most painful places to get a tat.

Hello Grazedcat,

while I have seen some very attractive tattoos, my feeling about having one myself is that some years later I'll go off it and be sorry that I had it. I have a couple of piercings but they are reversible.

Just be absolutely certain about what you want to do. I appreciate they can be removed but it's not that easy or cheap seemingly?

Mines on my back between shoulder blades . I'd had a few to drink and nearly had it on my neck but thank god he didn't put it there . My advice don't have one d*unk and don't have ur name in thi lol

Very good advice. The tattoo I'm looking to have is quite small - perhaps just an inch high and an inch wide. It's also a symbol that I have identified with for nearly nine years now, I'm not sure I'll go off it anytime soon.
