" In effect, the actual speed limit is unofficially 80. High 70's on a good clear road, actual cop cars are not gonna stop you. That's partly why the limit has never been raised, or will be. Beware however there are a lot of speed cameras placed inside overhead gantries. Out of interest, do you find it is safer trabelling at 80+ when you have to pay attention, or tootling along at 60+ and bored?" so..............nice clear road, cop cars parked with a speed cam........you pass him doing 78...........he wont stop you!!!! what roads that then?

It isn't 'unofficialy' anything, it officially is 70 and varies for other types of vehicle, eg LGV, Coaches, certain types of van etc. It is assumed that you can get away with 10% + 2mph of the speed limit, and to be fair you probably would but if the plod wants to be funny, the official limit is 70 ...

"There is always discrepancy in vehicle speedo's that is the reason. The law recognises that, that is why the ACPO guidlines say speedlimit+10%+2mph before action is taken. On motorways therefore that is 70+7+2= 79mph before you will get done. Lots of people know that and take advantage. You can check your own speedo with a satnav, for instance our Picasso which is only 18 months old shows 70mph on the dashboard but the satnav shows us at 67mph, the satnav cannot be wrong but the car can be!" speedo's are set at 5 miles slower than the speed shown on the speedometor

"Sorry but speedometers are not set to read 5 mph faster than real, at least my 14-year-old Land Rover isn’t, its dead on at 30 mph and 2 mph over at 70 mph. My 3-year-old 407 is better than 1% at any speed. Its often said that the 70 mph limit on motorways is outdated in respect of vehicle technology BUT people haven’t changed much, in fact I think its worse. Vehicles nowadays are so safe and easy to drive you don’t need to be a driver anymore, vehicles almost drive themselves! Tracking control, ABS etc. the problems occur when the speed goes beyond the vehicles ability, in other words, when something happens to make it ‘interesting’ people then find they don’t actually know how to deal with the situation as things change from everything being fine to totally out of control in a split second! " Hence when i get towards Bristol M5 to M4, i slow down and keep my distance. Was doing that stretch once, very busy bank holiday weekend, had a silly git pull in front of me from a slip road, complete with family and luggage in car, didnt match us for speed and had i not been watching my speed, id have gone up his ass

Why change it? If we all went faster then cars are less efficient and use more fuel. Slower is more environmentaly friendly.

" If we all went faster then cars are less efficient and use more fuel. Slower is more environmentaly friendly. fifty is thrifty but the tons more fun. I think the motorways would flow better regardless of speed if people were taught how to drive on them correctly and used the nearside lane unless overtaking, rather than sitting in the centre lane or at 70 in the righthand lane when the other lanes are empty and you catch them up at 80 on the nearside but legally cannot overtake. driving slowly you tend to switch off the concentration on the road ahead or play with the in car gadgets." . .I agree with the above, I do alot of motorway driving, and have noticed that over the last 10 or so years the general standard of motorway driving has fallen hugely, most hold ups are due to lane hogs and people driving to close to the car ahead, people braking althe time so they can stay as close as poss to the car infront causes whats known as the ripple effect, the first car brakes for a second, the second for 2 and so on untill sometimes the traffic stops altogether. lane hogs also cause this as people cant overtake as there arent enough faster lanes left, even tho the slow lane is often empty. Imo there should be a driving test for the motorways, i would happily take one, i might even learn something, i think we all might.

"surely everyone on the M1 is breaking the speed limit" Didn't think it was possible to get up to the speed limit on the M1, let alone exceed it!
