prozac weaning after a decade

I have a male friend who has taken prozac for over 10 years and wants to wean himself off as it causes wrarile disfunction in him and cant be good for such long term use. Has anyone any experience in coming off and also if you then could maintain an erection again after a long time?

There's no point getting advice from here because you won't know of it applys to your friend.

But I was on some similar type of drugs when i was young and I just stopped taking them because I didn't want to be dependant anymore. It was hard but I read a book on Cognitive behavioural therapy which changed my life.

Your friend needs to see his psychiatrist before attempting this not to do it on his own.

Maybe contact his local mental health team. There should be someone who he can speak to in confidence.

it's the brains lack of seratonin that the drug is used to replace but erectile dysfunction is a mind thing the drugs like viagra are actually good because they thin the blood so as long as the mind is ok it should repair

A psychiatrist shouldn't be necessary, unless your friend has very deep seated psychological problems. And if he has, his GP should have referred him already.

It will take a long time to wean off anti depressants. It is considered dangerous to just stop taking them. One alternative is to be prescribed another anti depressant which might not have such unwanted side effects. It is, however, very likely that the erection problems are more mental than a side effect of Prozac. Depression, stress, tiredness can all make it difficult for guys to get hard and stay hard. 90% of the battle for men is in the head and not physical.

His GP should be sympathetic and helpful. If, however, he/she is not, then he is fully entitled to a second opinion from another doctor

A psychiatrist can identify the correct drug better than a gp can while also assessing him.

Sadly that sort of service isn't readily available.

Serotonin, which is the main neurochemical that may be enhanced in its load within us by SSRI meds, such as Prozac, can have some very uncomfortable effects upon us, when its levels change, both up and down.

Any withdrawal should be carefully managed, as someone may get side effects worsened, new side effects and they may have suicidal intention.

As your friend may become suicidal from withdrawal, it is important to ensure his GP is involved and takes responsibility with him. The doc will understand the risks and is responsible for his care, and can agree a plan to trial withdrawal.

He should also discuss his ED with his doc, if this is the main reason he wants to stop.

Each SSRI drug stops the breakdown of serotonin in our brains, thus increasing its overall levels. Even though this is the standard objective of all of them, it does not mean that other SSRI's would have the same side effects for someone. He may thus have no ED side effect from a different SSRI, so if he needs such a medication, he may benefit from withdrawal from one and subsequent use of an alternative. Each of these medications will have differing results for people, the mix of side effects or benefits - if any - is very personal.

How SSRI's work - or not - is even disputed. As Serotonin levels will start increasing fairly quickly, but people don't experience lifting of depression for several weeks - if they even do at all - casts some doubt upon the method of action that I mentioned above, ie. incrsasing levels of available Serotonin is achieved by the drug being responsible for ending the depression, caused from a lack of Serotonin that the person has causing their depression.

It's likely this drug has worked for him, as he's used it for many years. what is uncertain is whether he may still need to take such a drug, even if not the same one, in order to continue to feel emotionally well.

I'd caution against withdrawal without his GP involvement.

I'd also recommend a combined approach of therapy and medication for depression, as enduring results seem to be good, based on studies of many people taking this approach. Just because something works well for groups of people, on average, it does not of course mean that any one individual will get any greater benefit, or any benefit at all.

I also agree that Pharmacists are great sources of information upon medication that we may take.

heard so many that cant take prozac because of side effects or non effect in my case- but any drug like this needs monitoring -his doc will advise and we all react differently - just dont rush

He doesn't feel like he wants to withdrawn without his doctors opinion and he's booked in for Friday.

He takes 10mg about every other day as he felt that was enough abs it was prescribed for his panic attacks.

Most hospital urology departments will also have an ED clinic where they assess the patient and try different methods to achieve tumescence. Most have psychosexual counselling available as well as a variety of drugs and devices. They fully realise how much of an effect ED can have on a persons life and their significant other. They will not laugh and are very understanding.

defiantly go down the CBT route I am cbt trained although only in the basics but there are loads of techniques he can use that will also help him while he's withdrawing from the medication. It's dangerous to just stop any medication with out medical support.

A good book on cbt is the sage a introduction to cbt it's ideal for people who are training in cbt or people receiving cbt as it talks about different techniques
