She is making a strange knocking noise when I put her out in first gear, and the noise disappear when I slip her into second gear.

She had a new gear box fitted at the beginning of the year, and I suspect it may be something to do with a cable being loose etc...

Any idea peeps?

sounds like 1st Gear is playing up, is it inder Warrenty still ?

It's over 8y old, however, the gearbox is still under warrenty as it was new in Jan 2010!

Now now Pearl this knocking noise is it when you drive off ? change gear ? or when you drive along in 1st gear? I reckon it sounds like a mounting, they are usually made of rubber with a metal casing, When they brea it allows the engine and gearbox to "flex" which can knock part of the body making a noise. I assume it's front wheel drive? Don't let it go on for too long before you get someone to have a llok. I'd volunteer myself but Truro is a bit far away although I will be coming home Friday night (VBG)

I believe the noise comes on when I drive off in first gear, and it stops when I change into second.

And it is a front wheel drive.

I would guess it is a mounting that has broken. you could try one simple thing put the car on a flat road turn the engine off engage 4th gear take the handbrake off lift the bonnet and rock the car forward and backward the engine should move a little (2" or so) if it moves a lot more then it is probably a faulty mounting. nearly said get a bloke to look at it but plenty of female mechanics these days lol

I plan to ring the dealership that fitted the gear box in Jan 10, as it is still under warranty.

She's done over 134k+ miles in over 8y and is an old girl for her make.

According to one of the gents that has serviced my car, she is now into the unknown territory!

Update!

The engineer and I took the car out for a little spin around the block, and he swiftly advised me not to drive it.

I stayed for about 45min while he tried to identify the origin of the sounds without much luck.

I was then loaned a car while they figure out what's wrong with her.

The money is on the gearbox at present.

I hope so too!

The clutch is also under warrenty.

With all the recent technological advancement in the motor industry, one still has to rely on one's senses to detect any issues!
