I see folks asking about Kik all the time is it just a form of text without letting the other see your mobile number / is it only for chat ? Or can you send media / photos between you ? Wondering whether its worth bothering with ! Any opinions gratefully accepted ( on this topic or any other relevant topic )

Yes you can send pics, videos etc as well as text, without the need to share a telephone number like Whatsapp
