quandary....

One of our goldfish Fin is acting really weird.

No obvious bumps or any fungus on him but he keeps swimming to the top of the tank and hasn't moved from the corner for hours.

Any advice greatly appreciated!

ours does that. He sleeps in the corner. See if he comes alive later, around feeding time. If still lethargic tomorrow add a tonic to the water.

One of ours sits at the bottom like that then revives. Have you got a pump on there is the water well oxygenated?

Got a pump and it's well oxygenated...there's 4 in total and the original two are now stuck side by side!

It's like they've fallen out with the new fish.

Weird!

We have a fish on its own in a tank in the kitchen because this happened. We thought the other three were ignoring it because it was dying so quarantined it......three years ago! It's still swimming round on its own

Sounds like a swimbladder problem. Fancy goldfish are particularly prone to this.

Not a great outlook, I fear. If you go to your local aquarist buy some tonic salt, which can be added according to the size of the tank. That might help. Good luck. It is quite distressing to see, I know

My Grandparents had a goldfish which they got from the rag and bone man many many years ago. It lived believe it or not for almost 20 years - Sammy was his name. Now as he got into his old age, he sometimes would go to the top and stay there for a long time and appear to be unwell. My Granddad used to put a tiny little bit of Epsom Salts into his water - only a teaspoonful into his bowl (It was a traditional round glass bowl) and that used to fix the fish up for months. How my Granddad knew that I have no idea, but it did seem to work.

Have you tried putting it in a glass of booze? It won't cure it but it is fun.

Seriously, I have tropical fish. All you can do is change the water regularly and clean the tank. I assume you use water treatments and test the water?

On a related note I have a tropical tank and noticed one of my Mollies died yesterday morning, I was in a rush to get to work so vowed to fish it out when I got home - but when I did get home it was nowhere to be seen and the only explanation is that it was eaten by the other fish in the tank in an act of piscine cannibalism.

Is that normal?

Yes. The fish will eat another dead fish. Unlikely it has been fully eaten after one day though. Chances are that the body is somewhere you can't see though or haven't noticed. Try to remove it if you can see it

Thanks I had a right good look yesterday and this morning to no avail. In the past when a fish has died I've been able to retrieve it pretty much 'untouched' but haven't a scooby where this one has gone? I'll take another look tomorrow ...

They can be hard to see sometimes, especially if you have rocks etc in your tank.

Shouldn't be too much trouble if you can't find it. Nature will take its course

Personally i think your beautiful fish is stuck in a place it doesn't wish to be. Probably a little sad, probably feeling a little unwanted, probably just needs a new friend.

Your fish is also probably very stubborn, and just doesn't want to talk to other fishies, thinks she/he can manage alone, even when a friend is there. But thats just my personal opinion obviously.

All my fish float.
