To be honest, I really hate that this word partner is being used for relationships.

Its ok for that word to be used in a gay, lesbian or bi relationship but for me I would say girlfriend like a normal person.

Some people always try to justify the use of that word for relationships like they're ashamed to say boyfriend/girlfriend/husband/wife like its immature or something.

They need to remember that its a relationship, NOT a business.

Anyone agree?

If a couple where living together but not married I would say partner but not after a couple of weeks being in a relationship

What's in a name ? It's what the two of you are about that matters....The adjective doesn't define you.

When I was married I said husband. I guess it's what you want to call them, if that particular person doesn't mind . I can't see it's an issue.

People refer to their "partner" as all sorts don't they ? I've often heard "her indoors or my other half. Just personal preference like anything really.

Well you can only say husband/wife if you're married, and girl/boyfriend is a bit infra dig if you're over 40. I like 'mate' myself but oop North it means friend so people get confused.

What about companion? Or lover? Fuck buddy is probably not good for dinner table discussions.

I don't like other half as that suggests you aren't a whole person on your own. However, I accept that is one of the terms for a relationship now.

How about significant other?

I think it also depends on age, I'm 40 and should I ever meet someone, I wouldn't want to be introduced as 'my girlfriend'

I don't mind preferences like "the other half" like you said but I just think saying "partner" in a relationship just sounds daft to be honest.

In long term relationships I've always just used the term wife . . It's simpler and doesn't make it sound like i'm 8 (girlfriend) . . By the way. . Is it another americanism that women have started using the term 'girlfriends' when referring to their friends ?
