We fell in love with a beagle on a holiday recently but her owners told us it is a hard breed to own. Massive problem with separation anxiety, noisy for neighbours and not a great coat for allergy sufferers.

Back to the drawing board for us.

But they are sooooooo cute!

I agree with the other beagle owners. Its our first dog and its been a steep learning curve! His coat shedding is relentless and he howls at all hours but he is sooo affectionate, a good quality for a family dog to possess!

Yeah I looked at a beagle many years ago when getting a dog and felt they were just too highly strung. In my opinion they are a working dog to live and work in packs and therefore don't make a good pet

Saying that through I went for a Basset instead now they are even harder work but I'd have a houseful if I could

They are happy replacing their pack lifestyle for one of a family environment, as long as they get their couple hours a day beagle sniffing time round the local woods!! Frustrating sometimes but we go off the general rule, if its easy it probably aint worth doing!!

We had a Basset bitch when I lived at my parents sometime in the dim and distant past. Lovely dog. When she died we git a male Basset....it ate the kitchen.

Literally....chewed the wooden doors up like sweets..stupidest dog I ever saw.

Neighbours have one and they found it easier buying a second dog to keep it company. Can't leave it for a second because as soon as it has a scent the head is down and will follow it all the way

I've got a beagle, and he's excellent.

He's a rescue dog, and had problems with loud noises and some of the separation anxiety. But he'd been very well trained.

He's wonderful off the lead and never strays far (up to 50m) But he's happy just pottering and sniffing in the fields.

Perfect on the lead too

He comes running with me too and thinks nothing of rolling off ten miles with me.

I had one a few years ago, he had a deformed front paw, we called him Jeremy.
