..this weekend I was at a party (usual state of affairs) & in the early hours we were sat around drinking & smoking dope when someone asked "where will your party of the century be?"

I answered "Berlin when the Wall comes down".

The next morning I staggered home to see that amazing footage of the Wall coming down.

18 months later I walked up Ünter Den Linden, beneath the Brandenburg Gate and into East Berlin, an incredible feeling for someone raised with the concept of the Iron Curtain.

Seems a lifetime ago, I have vague recollections of it and my parents saying how significant a moment in our lifetime it was going to be.

I remember walking along the ruins of the wall & meeting some German punks (I had a bright red mohican) who hired me a hammer & chisel for 6 Marks & I smashed a few lumps off the wall for souvenirs ??

That's a great story.

I was nearly 5 and actually living in Germany at the time (father in army) and I remember us going to Berlin not long after the wall came down.

I was inter railing around Europe (on my own!) and simply HAD to see Berlin and visit the Eastern side. I remember seeing Russian soldiers selling their caps and badges next to the Brandenburg Gate - they hadn't been paid in months and would take any Western Currency.

I got an incredible sense of the world changing rapidly around me, like it was shifting under my feet as I stood beneath the Brandenburg Gate.

Good times ??

It is, I spent an evening hanging around the 'zoo' area mixing with all the hippies and punks with stalls selling various bits of tat.

The church in the middle still has all the holes in it from WWII.

I should go back to Berlin, I enjoyed the city and the people.

I remember very well the night the wall came down - makes me feel sooo old that it was 25 years ago! I very much recall thinking at the time that even though I was very pleased for the Germans to be finially reunited, I so wanted to experience going through checkout Charlie!

I was 17 and was watching a movie when it was interrupted by a news report, I saw what was happening and went and woke my father and we sat and watched it, first proper bonding experience we'd ever had.

18 months after the fall, I stood in front of Checkpoint Charlie looking at the memorial to those who died trying to cross..

..the most recent was a young woman who was shot dead 3 months before the Wall fell..

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

I remember the day after work almost coming to a standstill as everyone was talking about it and then loads of us going out for a drink or 10 after work.

Amazing.
