I used to get my Saturday pay at Woolworths down the road and then go straight to Jones Brothers and get my stockings for the week. I was part of the protest at the closing and no other John Lewis store has ever matched Jones Brothers for range and service to my mind. The frontage is listed and the back stair case is the still the original one with the old cage lift shaft. However, I believe the first John Lewis store was actually Oxford Street. Not the current store location, which I believe came later. They are selling the book of their history to mark their 150th anniversary. John Spedan Lewis is one of my heroes. My mother worked in Jones Brothers and when I worked in that building years after Jones Brothers closed, my office was where she had her office. And, back to the subject, I love penguins and this ad is another corker. | |||

My nan worked there until it vlosed and then moved to john lewis and was there about 30years. After 25 years they threw her a party and as she loved going opera they gifted her some lovely opera glasses. They are a good company and take care of their loyal staff. | |||

"What with the amount of debt people get themselves into just to try and give people the perfect day I am not in the Christmas sprit as for the ad did you see how much they payed to make it " The cost of the ad is immaterial when it's a private company using money to get us to spend money. The ad provided work for those making it and will see JL Partners get a nice bonus in March. The 150 years ad running throughout the summer was lovely and very cleverly cut together, that would have cost a similar amount. However, I echo your concerns about debt. Give gifts of your presence. I make vouchers for a day with me for the kids. They can choose what we do and they get one on one time. | |||
