CHESTER

So the bonfire food thread got me thinking..

We used to always have Black Peas (or maple peas/parched peas) and they were amazing but when I talk about them to anyone I get looks like im mad!

Now I know If I go back to certain parts of Manchester I can get them dried at the grocers but its seems everywhere but Lancashire has never had them!

Anyone else had these or remember them!?

They come in like 2kg bags so if i get some i'll send some on! You have to soak them overnight like marrowfat peas.. Similar to mushy peas but just that little bit nice!

Id kill for some tonight!!

Possibly.. They are actually a browny/grey colour but called Black Peas!

Been eating black peas for the last week ??

They are actually the dried peas from the purple-podded pea (whatever that is), seems that outside of Rochdale/Oldham/Bury area they are unknown. Also munched my way through proper parkin made with black treacle - not that effete Yorkshire shite with golden syrup!

Love black peas with loads of vinegar mmmmmmm still very popular in Wigan .... Old saying was that they were that colour cos blackys washed there feet in um lol ... Can't say that these days

If I remember rightly they are aso known as pigeon peas and you could get them from pet shop lol ... Half of Lancashire will be heading for chester if you makin some lol

Parched peas made it a far north as Preston where i grew up. Used to get them in little cup from the market when i was a little un. Not had em for years!
