Can someone help me?

My toilet won't flush unless I push the ballcock down till the water fills to a certain level.

How can I solve this?

You need to adjust it there is a screw thread on the ballcock to allow it to float higher try that first.

Bend the arm of the ballcock so the ball is lower in the water. Don't let the ball fall off though, or you'll end up like I did a few weeks ago...waking up to the sound of overflowing water from the cistern covering the bathroom floor!

No he needs more water not less because his syphon washer is on the way out, it won't pull the water over unless it's very high.... You need a new syphon washer

The water level is a red herring,I assume you are repeatedly pressing the lever down untill it flushes.

In which case as above a new syphon washer is called for (pennies)

Unless you are really lucky replacing valve involves disconnecting cistern entirely from wall to get to valve fixing but.

Theres round and lozenge shaped washers,all it is a thin semi flexible piece of plastic.Any plumbers merchent or the big DIY sheds have em

as above has stated but theres 2 types

old style need to take box off the toilet to repair syphon washer which means if your lucky the bolts under the system will unscrew more than anything these need cutting and replacing

new style held on by a screw inside the box much easier to replace the syphon washer

if old style consider a much longer time and get all the parts needed first 2 new bolts, a new toilet pan washer and the syphon washer

tape a couple of tuppennys to the top. thats what i did til the plumber came out... after at him, a tenner later and job done.

OH stop sniggering you lot.. you know what i mean!!!

Sounds to me like the ballcock valve is knackered.

They're very cheap and easy to replace.

Agreed it's most likely the siphon washer, but just check a couple of things:

Is the toilet filling to it's full level? If it's only part filling that could be why it's not siphoning the water out properly.

Is the piston rod coming fully up when the flush is activated? - if the rod isn't at it's full stroke then this may prevent a flush cycle.

Replace the whole mechanism with a bottom or side entry float valve.

It'll cost you less than a tenner and you'll not have to mess with your ballcock again
