Work out for busy mom

Hi all,

I come to you seeking advice on behalf of a busy mom who wishes to get fitter/stronger/faster... She looks 'fit' but isn't...if that makes sense.

She's just joined one of those 24/7 gyms and attends two classes... Tabata on a Sunday morning and either "Leg, Bums and Tums" or "Core and Stretch" on a Wednesday.... She also plays some basketball with friends after her Tabata class on the Sunday.

She wishes to add some weights into her routine but isn't sure which she ought to do... Also, she's concerned that only one day of weights isn't enough...but doesn't really have any more time except perhaps on a Thursday evening.

I'm guessing squats, pull ups and deadlifts may be a way to go...but I'm very far from being a gym expert.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

x

depending on the time and the facilities, hiit can give quick results, there are loads on the video sharing sites, one of the fastest ways of improving cardio fitness and recovery rates very simply is the horrible hill sprint

30 Day Shred DVD by Jillian Michaels. Only a 20 min workout but awesome.

She's brutal. I do recommend building in rest days though and not doing it all at once as you can get injured.

Brighton - even Hove!

Running up and down stairs and stretching might do something....a static bike? Burn calories through lots of sex

High intensity workout and if there's someone who can show her good technique then kettlebells are fantastic for muscle and overall fitness. But if anyone shows her to use them like a dumbbell then ignore all their advice. Google Keith Webber or pavel tsatsouline and focus on swing and Turkish get up

Get her to change classes and opt for circuit training instead. All over full body workout for improving cardio, stamina and strength there should be some weight training in there aswel on a few of the stations in the circuits class.

Aha...hadn't thought of that... I'll check out their timetable.

I think the tabata hits the HIIT that some folks have suggested.

Look forget all this fad stuff for quick results.

At the end of the day good old fashioned hard work and dedication will get results.

High intensity stuff is great if you are already fit but a short route to injury if you are just starting out.

X trainer, bike, concept two rowing machine, squats lunges and chest press, plank and sit ups.

Do this three times a week for an hour a time, three months will see results.

Pm if you want a more dedicated routine.

Her gym might also do a weights conditioning class or pump class. That's what I do. Conditioning is mostly hand weights and lots of planking/ab work etc while pump is with a barbell and lots of squats/lunges etc. I also do a piloxing class which is brilliant.

The timetable for the place based on the days she is available is:

Wednesday: Legs Bums and Tums or Core and Stretch

Thursdays: Boxfit or Core and Ab Circuit

Sundays: Tabata or Core and Stretch or Circuit + Basketball with friends

Is there a good combination in there, or is a Gillian Michael a few times a week the way forward...?

Are people asking if she's American because of the use of the word Mom?

My friend who's from Wolverhampton says mom and I asked her if she had American relatives and she said no. Since then I've noticed it more commonly used. My other friends hubby is from Huddersfield and he says it too.

An hour at a time for a busy mum? Maybe breakdown into 20-30 minute sessions.

Together with a proper diet and good sleep.

Plus, i'm guessing that the OP's mum is 50+, wrong side to be doing muscle building exercises.

Maybe throw some Pilates or Yoga in for suppleness?

Vary the routines over a period of time, nothing more demoralising than the same workouts.

The american term ass as opposed to the British arse, lol. Perfectly demonstrated by Basil Fawlty and the american guest in the Waldorf salad episode of Fawlty Towers.
