"It begs the question, "what do you see as being fat" Anintersting one, the medical profession use BMI (Body Mass Index) to determine this. According to the BMI scale I am clinically Obese, it doesnt take into account your build type! I certainly dont have a wash board stomach but I am not fat lol, Im very broad kinda Rugby player build. BMI is a load of tosh Lolly has been told to put weight on so that she will only need to visit her specialist once a year (rather than every 6 months) now she has a pot belly ok so shes only 8 stone but shes got a tiny frame and is only 5ft!!!! "Being a fat/obese person, i actually think the word obese hits home more. Fat can range from being a couple of pounds overweight to the extreme, where as you have to be a certain amount overweight to be classed as obese, very obese or morbidly obese. In my opinion morbidly obese has a much stronger ring too it. Being fat is down to the individual(in most cases) and down to the parents in minors. There are however medical reasons why people become fat. I was never overweight at school in fact i was just average, why? Because we had games lessons, we all walked to school, we went swimming after school and walked everywhere. Crap food wasnt as available as it is now. When i had my son i vowed i wouldnt have a fat child. He walked (and still does) everywhere as well as riding his bike, he was always out and ran for the school. He was given good healthy meals ( i was slightly obsessed by it) he never in his early life ever had a jar of baby food it was always good food pureed, he never had sweets until 5 and never had anything to drink apart from low calorie drinks. He was only allowed playstation at certain times. So i took full responsibility for my sons health. Now, some people (parents) are not necessarily of the mind set of how to keep a check on their childrens health. Due to various reasons, for this purpose i think there should be classes for them to attend to educate them. As for adults being fat/obese majority of the time it is in there hands. Food can and is an addiction to some people. Unlike drugs and alcohol we have to eat to survive. Rather than faddy diets i think there should be some form of councelling classes so that some adults can get to the bottom of there issues for being overweight (these may exist but i dont know any). Having said all this why am i fat/obese? Well 60% is my own fault, im rubbish at portion control and dont take enough exercise, the othe 40% is due to medication. The medication, slows my metabolic rate and also increases my appetite. Unfortunatly i need to take the medication to be well. Inconclusion to what i have just written, if a child is overweight for no medical reason then it is up to the parent to either seek help with understanding diet needs or do it themselves and as for adults, if it is just a case over indulgence rather than an addiction again down to will power. If however, it is for other medical reasons then i feel there should be some intervention from the health authorities" totally agree with this. i have fluctuated between a healthy weight and obesity since my mid teens. the majority of the weight was gained after being prescribed medication. 4 stone in as many years. i stopped taking the medication and lost 4 stone. i became very ill. i was forced to start the medication again and put it all back on again. i will always be big as long as i take them and i will probably be prescribed them for life. yes there will be risks of cancer stroke diabetes heart disease etc etc but at least i have a greater chance of being around in 10 yrs, which would not be the case if i stopped the meds.

"This is an interesting topic and I hadn't any idea of the size of the problem till I joined a gym recently. I noticed a class called "Bootcamp" on the noticeboard and thinking it might be circuit training for adults was very surprised to see a load of folks in NHS gear looking after overweight kids. I think we are in for big big problems with this. No-one seems to walk to school any more and folks of all ages just aren't active. With the net there has never been as much information on health and training available and yet obesity rates get worse. And to be honest I prefer to call it "obesity" as a medical term focuses my mind that at some point this thing might cause major health problems if it's not adressed. I'm trying to get fit and it is a bugger to do but I'm trying." You weren't aware of the size of it .. ?? Is that a joke .... made me laugh. I have NEVER seen a fat person in a concentration camp ...... Can't have much sympathy for those who say they can't help it ( medicines not included obviously ) Im fat cos of meds tho ...... I self prescribe tons of cake n loads of sedentary work. Right ....... today is the start of me being healthier by Xmas ..... Less cake more swimming ...... Anyone joining in ?

"I have no problem with calling myself fat and no problem with people saying I am fat... as long as I can be equally honest about them. Changing the name does not change the ownership of the problem.... the bigger question is... what's the real reason they want to talk about changing ownership? Just like the term "big society".... just anoither way of saying "fuck you, you're on your own"" Totally agree with this statement polo.

It's a difficult & tender subject - fat/obese people are one of the few acceptable targets for abuse in our 'modern, touchy-feely society'. Yes, most large people are such through their own efforts but does that mean we as a society should not help them? Preventing obesity is of critical importance, every pound not spent now means ten quid spent yrs down the line on medical interventions. Ok, i weigh 9 stone wet through & cycle almost obsessively but before i took it up i found myself getting somewhat rotund due to a lifestyle of beer & unhealthy living. The trick IMHO is to find an activity you really enjoy, that way it never becomes a chore.

Too right far too many don't get any exercise at all then say they eat nothing and its all due to a slow metabolism. Exercise is the answer! Burn off what you eat and you don't get fat.

""GPs and other health professionals should tell people they are fat rather than obese", England's public health minister Anne Milton told the BBC. Professor Steve Field, of the Royal College of GPs, said he agreed with Ms Milton and already tried to use the term fat as much as he could. "I think the term obese medicalises the state. It makes it a third person issue. I think we need to sometimes be more brutal and honest." So there we have it. Obesity : NHS problem and responsibility. Fat : personal responsibility. " how is being fat your problem but being obese isnt? so if you eat to much and become fat thats your fault but if you carry on eating and become to the point of being obese its now the NHS's problem? what a load of rubbish lol

"People who overfeed their kids and don't get them to exercise should be done for child abuse, just the same as they would be if they starved them. At our schools you could count the fat kids on one hand, now there's loads of them. We all have mirrors and know when we're getting out of shape, the simple answer is several small healthy meals per day, expend more calories than you take in,never fails! XXXX" I would agree to a point but personally I see a difference between being obese and being fat, not everyone does I know. To me as I said earlier you can be a size 8 and fat, I am very slim and have a bit of a belly so consider myself fat at 10 stones. I see obese as being unhealthy due to your weight and that is the difference, some people are large but still healthy and attrative, some are not so large but thier size IS causing them health issues. If a parent allows a child to have health problems due to thier weight, whatever thier weight then it IS the same as starving them, it is child abuse.
