Driving Posture

I've noticed a trend with male drivers lately, whilst driving they'll have their seat far enough back so they can have their right arm stretched out straight and hand resting on top of the steering wheel, is this you? Does it make you look cool? Then there's the opposite end where the driver is so close to the steering wheel, their chin is almost touching it.

So what's your comfortable driving position?

Back of Beyond

Having just driven 2500 kilometres back from Spain (and drove there as well) nearly 7000kilomtres covered in 23 days hols. I can honestly say that I sat sideways in seat, slouched down, sat upright and countless other positions to releive the sore spots. Even using the left foot for acceleration and resting the right foot at times, (wished I'd had cruise control)

Never ever drove with my arm outstretched like that though, its too tiring in too short a time. The youngsters do it to make themselves look cool. Must have been watching too many 'drift' type movies

I have my eyes on the road ahead and they flicker to the sides up at lights in my mirrors etc ..... BUT i've never got long enough to look to be able to tell 1. If the driver is a bloke and 2. How the fugg he holds the steering wheel.

I don't know where I picked up all this advice, but my understanding of how a seat *should" be set is:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Your head should be within an inch of the headrest (minimises whiplash).

Your arms should be straight when holding the wheel at the top - they will then be slightly bent at the "10 to 2" recommended grip position.

Your legs should be straight when fully depressing the clutch.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As I say, I can provide no source, but it's reasonably comfortable.

we do all those things and more on the way to spain lol , its about 17 hours to get here from calais

one thing you never mentioned was to put clothes pegs on your ear lobes , and an elastic band on your wrist to ping every so often to keep you awake

You don't get much choice in a Lada Riva! You have to sit where the seat is rusted to

I prefer to sit up straight, not too close because i like my back supported. My son, when he drove, lay back almost on the back seat most stupid position but then he is 6ft 3in, wonder if that makes a difference

Exactly right and i hate it when my car goes to the garage or my son moves my car as the seat never gets put back and i cant reach the pedals without getting a bus there but then he does have 3ft 3in legs
