I don't think the Americans are happy with their big expensive blaze.

manchester & NI

Defintely agree

Friends of my parents tried to put in an open fire by themselves over summer (so it was ready for winter) without an approved engineer - the husband ended up in hospital with mild carbon monoxide poisoning apparently.

Not sure the staff of Didcot 'B' would agree that switching off the lights and having a real fire is such a great idea.

I love toasting toast on a real fire. it tastes the best. I used to hate cleaning out the fireplace at my last house, but once the fire was lit - nothing cosier!

Yes or scoring a goal.

If it's a poo it needs to be a self wiper for it to be epic

Over the rainbow, under the bridge

The draw back with real open fires is the mess. Cleaning out the grate and building a fire is dirty and time consuming. My mum had to do this every morning when I was little as all we had in the entire house was an open fire.

I've got the best of both worlds. Central heating and a bioethanol fire in the lounge. So it's a real fire without the mess and smoke. And the chimney won't ever need sweeping. Very cosy in the winter.
