Costa Blanca Spain...

In the past I always preferred BMW but these days it has to be Mercedes.

I still think that BMW are a bit better when it comes to handling and general feel of the car, but Mercedes have (in my _iew) got the styling a bit better. Also for reliability the Merc's win hands down (too many electrical glitches on the newer BMW's) My old 2005 C class diesel did 250,000 kms and apart from general servicing cost me only just over a hundred quid in repairs in over six years for one burst pipe on or around the turbo.

The BMW manual gearboxes were always very slick and the Merc's could be a bit clunky (especially on the old 190's and the early C class) but Mercedes have always had the best auto boxes, and the later manuals are much better.

I was 25 years in the motor trade in the UK and handled literally thousands of cars in my time.

Currently driving 2012 C class diesel estate.

I choose not to use my company vehicle for private use. I have a tracker fitted so every journey is logged.

I use the Z3 for sunny days and the old Merc for everything else

Sorry I have to bite here You've been blinkered by the Italian 'Flare' that actually makes you end up paying for overpriced 'pretty' stuff of poor build quality which will slowly fall apart around you the further you drive before having a spectacular failure of the electronics. Of course as you know a lot about cars you're fully aware of this FACT

Personally I'd take Jap or German engineering over Italian, sorry!

As for the OP original question. If I had to make the choice between those two currently I'd go for a BMW based on their current ranges.

I counter your sarcasm with the fact that I do happen to know a great deal about cars, I've fixed thousands over the years.

German build quality is nowhere near what it was 20yrs ago and YOY appear to subscribe to the early 80's stereotype of Italian cars. Their build quality since the 90's has been on par with, often better than that of the Germans.

Your point about Japanese cars is excellent, however they're quite dull.

I stand by my original post....

I'd go BMW each time now. If you just want comfort go merc if you however enjoy driving go BMW. You will not get the interior quality from any jap car.

As for the people that claim never to have met a BMW driver that was not a twat I say that you have not met many BMW drivers. The problem ones are the people that buy the cheap second hand ones and drive like they have something to prove.

My daily driver is a 5 series and I love it, but I keep my special car for the weekends !

My current car is 18 and a half years old. I have had it for 11 and a half years of that. It starts first time, every time, and last week sailed through the MoT.

It is neither German, Italian or French.

Brand new it represented much better value for money than anything in Europe - and insurance is cheaper.

I will never sell it - but will pass it down to my son (currently nearly 7 years old)

Will be buying another similar hopefully within the next year.

And no, it's not Japanese either

BMW's are the 'drivers' car.

but...

If you want to live longer then drive a Merc, they seem to lead the world in introducing advanced safety features.

Also in numerous stress studies it has been shown that for some reason driving a Merc reduces your heartbeat relative to driving any other make of car.

Bmw all the way, Mercedes has to many electrical issues and the fuel economy is rubbish. The driving position and handling is brilliant on a bmw, I wouldn't trade my 6 series for anything else. Lorraine has a mini and loves it. Both have tried Mercedes, and we both had a bad experience!!
