HEART FAILURE DIAGNOSIS

Just had this very recent diagnosis and trying to take it in. So was just wondering if anyone else has been where I am at?

Been given meds to attempt to make the heart stronger again and I know it will be a long road.

I had a heart attack early last year and had two stents fitted. I now feel better than I have done for years. It takes time, and some meds you may be on for life, but honestly it's not the end of the world

Heart failure and heart attack are not the same but good to hear you feel better as a result. Mine began with shortness of breath and lots of fluid build up and lots of tests.Just a scary place to be when I have no support.

Was diagnosed with this late 2011, had lots of drugs my advice don't let them give you ramipril. I had it for 2 years (atrial fibrillation) then was fixed with an ablation procedure. Any questions pm me any time. I also had cardio myopathy.

I take ramipril"

I was on 8mg, and had a terrible cough everytime I lay down to sleep. Was so glad to get off it!

I have hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy aka HOCM.

It's "a disease that results in abnormal thickening of the myocardium most commonly in the interventricular septum with pathologic “myocardial disarray” upon microscopic inspection. HOCM can result in clinic heart failure, life-threatening arrhythmias, mitral regurgitation and sudden cardiac death."

The HOCM has brought a few other heart and lung problems.

One piece of advice if I may. Don't get too caught up in internet discussions re surgery, medication and prognosis. There's as many different ways of treating heart failure as there are patients.

Have been prescribed 2.5mg of ramipril that is taken at night. ( Pharmacist mentioned dry cough) and 5mg of procoralan which I take half a tablet of twice a day to reduce heart rate.

Have not been referred to a heart failure nurse. Will be speaking to gp hopefully tomorrow.

Just take things easy and make sure you take your meds as prescribed.

I have LVSD and other than feeling tired,manage it quite well.

Still going 3 years after being diagnosed so dont think its the end of the world.

Ask your GP about going to Cardio Rehab,it helps you get your head round it and offers lots of support, as well as self help groups.

Lots of heart problems are now very treatable with medicine or machines but you have to know there's a problem before you can do something about it.

Fabrice Muamba was fortunate in that he collapsed somewhere there was excellent medical help and a defibrillator on hand.

Most people aren't so lucky.

My diagnosis is heart failure. Left hand side of heart is enlarged and weak which is what showed up on heart echo last month.

OP I note you state you have no support,

if you're not able to speak with family /friends etc then perhaps ask your medical team about local support groups?

I've just googled your condition and organisations like the BHF and others may be a good source of support/signposting if you're interested.

I wish you all the best and hope you get the support you may feel you need x

LVSD then means the left side of the heart isn't pumping blood enough around the body. Meds will help as too will lifestyle changes ie diet, cholesterol, if u smoke stop. But it's somthing that people can live years with. It doesn't mean your heart will fail tomorrow.
