Passports are removed or destroyed when you 'enlist', and life expectancy of travel jihadists is generally low as they are used as vanguard troops.

Deciding that it's not for you is unlikely to get your Passport returned and absenting yourself is likely to result in a whole barrel of laughs when your erstwhile companions catch-up with you.

They went out there presumably to overthrow the Syrian government, I don't really understand why but that was what western governments wanted at the time.

ISIS was a well organised force and they probably joined thinking they were overthrowing the government, but then the rules changed.

Unfortunately once in an army you follow the orders given desertion in war is still firing squad penalty in the UK army so no reason to think it would be any different in ISIS.

No matter how good the intentions were on leaving the UK they are now between a rock and a hard place with no way out, unless ISIS win or lose and peace returns.

I think it is sad that being young, stupid/misguided leads to death. Those from this country that went out to help Franco in the Spanish Civil War were able to come back.

The threat levels here are different, I understand that, but being young and malleable doesn't equate to being evil in my head. It does send a message back to those that are thinking of going. Unfortunately, I fear that one of the consequences will be to push the radicalised, daft youth, to concentrate on terror here rather than over there.

This is so true. Real war is brutal and modern weaponry devastates the human body. These young guys are facing horrors that they could never have imagined and for which 40 virgins are probably not worth enduring. Fuck em.

We have had no contact with them apart from giving them weapons n training.

There fighting each other. While we can't decide who to help,

1 mth we bomb asad

2nd mth we bomb free syrian army

now we're bombing isis

we have armed all these groups. Time for the leaders in the west to explain the mess they've caused.

I do agree.. I wish we could diplomatically try to encourage Turkey, Saudi and Egypt to try to take charge and sort out the regions issues.... Weapons sales must be up, and I guess, for some powerful people, things like that are all that matter

People should cast their minds back into the recent past when Assad was allegedly using chemical weapons on his own people. Cameron did everything he could to take us to war in support of the 'rebels'.

Many in the media and lots of the voices on here backed him. There was huge support for the 'we need to do something' camp.

When the government was defeated in the commons vote Cameron and many of his supporters made clear their belief that a mistake had been made but that they would find other ways in which to support the rebels. The USA was even more explicit in their decision to arm the rebels.

We know today that the most organised of these rebels has morphed into ISIL.

Some of these youths who have been caught up in this mess originally wanted to do exactly what Cameron wanted to do and if a vote had gone differently would be fighting with our troops.

There is a clear distinction between those who went then and those who have joined ISIL recently.

It is not always as simple as those wanting to sell newspapers to the (at times) easily led masses would have you believe.
