Hi all...

I'm in the market for a car... A second car which will really only be used to get me to work and back... (Work place is a 15-20 minutes way)

I don't wish to spend lots of money on a new car, and am wary that even a second hand car has costs - tax, insurance (I've only been driving 2 years - and as second driver), repairs et al.

Has anybody gone down the car leasing route...? Is it worth considering? Particularly something like Peugeot's just add fuel offers?

Check mileage restriction

Say your work is 10 miles away (a reasonable commute these days)

20 miles a day, 5 days a week, 46 weeks a year is 4,600 miles a year

Doesn't leave a great deal of allowance for shopping trips, family visits, dropping kids off etc and before you know it, you are topping that magic 6,000 miles per annum limit that a lot if 'cheap' car deals seem to be based on.

Then we are into excess mileage fees ... suddenly not so good a deal

Personally I'd buy a cheap, well serviced used car, you're free to do with it as you please then.

Try something like a smart fortwo

Cheap to buy second hand £30 a yr tax cheap insurance and fairly economical

Unless you're self employed a lease car has no benefits to you your mileage is to low i do over 80,000k in 3 years just sold my 4x4 167k in 5 years and i dont lease .even if you was self employed you need a big turn over to make it worthwhile . As for disconnecting the speedo dont recommend this you be wide open to speeding fines and a heavy fine from the courts if found out . Best thing is a small car look around for the one's that are cheap to insure and tax

Some kesse cars have up to 10k p/a limit but I think its not your best option.

More costly in the long run I think.

I would get a second hand small cheap to run diesel.

I'm only about 2-3 miles from work - 6 miles a day.. and we do have a primary car..

What's changed is that I no longer work at the same place as my partner...and literally only need a car to take me to work and back...

Good luck on disconnecting the Speedo, That will show up as a fault code when you take it back for a service, They will in turn inform the Lease Company who will insist that you purchase the Vehicle at full list price

Or walk....unless you have to carry loads of kit with you or something, it will be so much cheaper and probably quicker to cycle or walk if it's only a short distance and you've got a primary car anyway!

Get yourself a little Moped.

Hundred to the gallon and cheap as chips on insurance and road tax.

Plus the added bonus of not having to be stuck in traffic,during the rush hour and no congestion charge.

I heard a report on the wireless about some leasing agents being a bit rum when it came to assessing damage and wear on cars they'd leased out. A moped sounds good, although not without drawbacks.

Leasing isn't as bad as some make out as it's convenient and often a cheaper way to run a new car but you do need to make sure you set the lease up with the right mileage limits (which can be anything from 5k to 35k pa with most lease companies) and I'd advise getting smart repairs done before you return the car as I've known people to be charged for full bonnet when they just had a few stone chips. Also you would have to service to manufacturer standards otherwise you would incur charges so I'd look at adding service and maybe maintenance to the contact too.

Must admit though that for a second car doing such low mileage I personally would prob just pay a couple of hundred quid for an old run around, but that's just me!
