Something along the lines of a Fiat Punto or a Ford Focus 1.4 should be reasonable. Ignore the fiesta and corsa as they are tagged as "boy racer" and the insurance companies know it. If he isn't bothered about street cred, a chevrolet matiz might be an option?

Its all down to budget really. X

Drill a mock 'profile' of him into the comparison sites and keep changing the vehicle to see.

Put at least yourself on his policy (his mother too perhaps if possible) as that will shave off a fair amount.

Owners clubs sometimes do discounts so consider that too.

Car insurance is calculated by a variety of statistics, including how many claims are made from owners of a model so the smallest cars aren't always the cheapest.

Always worth checking a few local brokers too.

Best buy a cheap car for him to drive as his first car- corsa, clio, punto are ten a penny.

Then go 3rd party only on insurance until he gets his 1st year no claims.

£800 first car + £600 3rd party is cheaper in year one than fully comp on any car. So if he did bump ithis you wouldn't be too bothered about scratches n scrapes on a new car by a novice.

My youngest paid £1700 on renult clio 1.2 last year. This year I got him onto my policy and it's cost £1400 fully comprehensive. I found Admiral to be the cheapest.

Look at a multi car policy for the house. Some will include under 25s and separately protect ncb. I'm looking at getting my daughter a classic car as her first but going through owners clubs to get quotes

A number of insurers also offer discounts to those who have passed the Advanced driving test (and no, I don't mean pass plus)

The IAM (institutue of advanced motorists) or ROSPA can provide more info.

Inusrance premiums are calculated on risk. The higher the risk, the higher the premium. Unfortunately, young, inexperienced and particularly male drivers are considered the highest risk.

Whether you, your wife or the next door neighbours cat are on the policy, if it's his policy and he's the main driver, the premium will be high.

Don't fall into the musconception that you could take out a policy in your name with him as a named driver.

If he's involved in an accident and the insurance company discovers it's actually his car, they will refuse to pay out - and then you ciuld be sued by any third party and also risk proscecution for insurance fraud.

Car wise, he's better off with something with a small engine that has low repair costs.

When I was a young man Ford's, such as Fiestas or Escorts were usually a sound bet - so natutally I bought a Capri, lol.

Citroen Saxo's seem to be popular with youngsters these days and are also reasonably cheap to repair.

Insurance - even third party - will probably cost more than the car is worth in the first year.

This is what has caused a lot of problems with uninsured drivers and why the industry needs a radical shake up.

Also try Adrian flux insurance I can get mine fully comp with all modifications declared for £1600

Which considering most insurers won't touch me with mods isn't too bad

Really? £1100 for my first year at age 35. The same car with an 18 year old driver was nearly £3k.

The best tip I think is to add other, experienced drivers (if they have the title Dr then even better)

My other half bought his first car about 8 months ago and found that adding his step dad to the policy as a named driver cut the cost considerably. Just remember that the named driver has to actually drive the car occasionally

I did read somewhere that "The Beetle" was officially the cheapest to insure. Either old or new, it doesn't matter. Also there are discounts to be had by being a member of the owner's club.

I got my lad onto motorbikes, his fully comp insurance on a sporty(ish) bike is only £200 where on a car it would be £1500 or more. Getting older provides the biggest discounts, and waiting 6 months will also reduce his costs by quite a bit.

Getting somebody on as a named driver hardly does anything for the price so unless your planning on sharing the car its pointless! My 1st car when was 23 was a Renault scenic 1.6 and the insurance was just under 1k.

A family car is often cheaper to insure than a typical 'cheap to insure car'.

With 1 years no claims and 2 drivers in their 20's we pay just under 500 for the year! We have an MG ZT (rover in a dress)

It brought my fiance's insurance down by a third! Admittedly he's 43 but it's still his first car.

Initially he went to his broker and the quote was double the cost of the car. Going on a well known meerkat site halved it. Adding his mate cut an extra 100 off it and adding his stepdad (who's title is Dr) cut it by another third

As others have said put on other drivers as named drivers.

pick a car that young drivers don't tend to drive.

My daughter's second car was an MGF. 1800cc 16valve. Way cheaper to insure than the mini she origionally wanted to buy and only cost £650 to buy it too

A black box to moniter their driving can help the price too. If they speed it costs them more which gave us peace of mind.

One of my other daughters was in a crash with a black box in her car. She was shunted from behind. They rang her within minutes of the accident to see if she was ok and if she needed assistance. They knew exactly where she was too.

Have a look at classic car insurance for something like a 70's Beetle. You may pay more for the car (but the value should hold) and classic car insurance is normally a lot cheaper. You will also have a cool car and one that you can do simple maintenance tasks on

The addition of named drivers doesn't work for all though. We tried it when I bought my vespa, I ride on L plates with cbt. OH's stepdad had a full bike licence before he had a car, it actually put the cost up when I added him

I said 'most parts'. I've seen quotes as low as £550 for an 18yr old fully comp.

You can get a list of which cars full into which insurance groups from a site like parkers.... Also a lot of comparison sites will have the same

If it is for your lad and you drive the car occasionally then also put your name down on it as well as the second driver

had this problem a few years ago myself but cause of my girly bits it was a bit cheaper. any 'hot hatch' will be extortionate, id go with the poster above and check on parkers for insurance groups and see if theres something he like, mind u the engine would be no bigger than a 1.2

The lower insurance group does not always mean the lowest premiums,

I've had 2 cars both group 16 and was £700 difference

My first after I passed my test was a pug 306 turbo diesel.

That was cheaper to insure than any other hatchback

The cheapest cars to insure are 'classic' cars. There is a huge drop in insurance costs when any vehicle makes it to its and if you can find one first registered before Jan 1974 there is no VED either.

loads of boy/girl racers wizzing about in them around manchester .1.0 ka,lupo,corsa,panda,fox,pug106,piacanto ,matiz,etc should be low on insurance and running costs .if you have a relative with a different postcode try insuring it at that address you can save hundreds that way .

I work in the motor trade ... We find that customers are telling us that it's best to NOT go for an old cheap car, this is due to safety and risk purposes putting insurance costs up. Most are saying that the amount to insure an old car monthly actually covers the monthly in a new car (ie VW Up! - guess who I work for!) and then having insurance too. A VW Up! Is a group 1E which is the lowest possible.

my son is 23 - was 22 when passed test and got his own car - went on his own insurance but with dad as a named driver - got a fair bit off it for that (either of us would have done as we have years of no claims etc) - he did masses of compare things where you put all details in bar the car and when we went car hunting just added the car info and got the insurance comparisons - some were quite surprising - he ended up with a 1.4 4 dr punto
