...Cycled the Coast-To-Coast route in one day!

From Workington, Cumbria through to Sunderland. It's the toughest thing i've ever done & i have literally nothing left in me now!

Set off at 07:00hrs and hit Roker Pier at 10:30pm. We had too many stops & spent too much time waiting for the two slower lads - at Hartside i waited over 40 minutes for the last chap to climb the hill.

We made the decision to split into two teams of two and I & one other set off ahead.

Final tally was :-

132.53 miles

9317 ft of ascent

10.45hrs rolling time

15.5hrs total

I'm absolutely shattered, but i've managed to raise some money for Breast Cancer Care

One day, that is good going.. I am taking 10 teenagers on the coast to coast in a few weeks as part of their Duke of Edinburghs award, giving them 3 days to complete it.... they are starting from Middlesboro... so which is the hardest leg of the route?

She's still in bed - brave girl drove the support vehicle from Workington to Sunderland then drove us home!

DEFINITELY the middle section across the North Pennines.

The Lakes are pretty easy as the route follows the valleys.

It's when you cross into the central belt it gets hard. The first big climb is Hartside (1903ft) and then it's relentless, constant big hills for around 30 miles until the final killer climb from Stanhope.

3rd section to the coast is flat and fast - can be tricky to navigate on the traffic-free trails as the signs are only little.

Thanks, I need to drive / walk the route before the kids do it... but as its DoE they plan their own route and are remotley supervised, but its easy for me to drive it when they have to cycle it. how did your bike fare up? we are taking spare parts and a few spare bikes?

I had no problems & only 1 chap had a puncture. Depending on the bikes you'll need several spare tubes, a couple of tyres and every rider should carry a full trail tool kit incl a chain tool (learnt that lesson!) and know how to use it.

Bike was a flat-barred 700x28c road bike, even the off-road sections (sustrans C2C route) are doable on a road bike, even the 'interesting' section down to Bassenthwaite - would have been great on my mtb's though!
