Bradford

We send up fireworks and set fires to remember remember, the 5th of November. But how did a terrorist plot become Bonfire Night?

Will we be "celebrating" September 11th or 7th July in 400 years time?

PS, I'm off to a fireworks party and only started this topic because I'm watching that thing on BBC2.

It's more to celebrate the fooling of the plot not celebrating the plot itself.

I had a similar conversation a few weeks ago.

Isn't Guy Fawkes (and the burning of) more of a warning than a celebration?

Seems bizarre to indoctrinate such an occasion into our culture.

can see why at the time the establishment would want the catholics reminded of what may happen to any more 'plotters' but I suppose like many 'traditions' today the actual reasons for are lost in the commercialising of tat to sell..

Titz Towers, North Notts

Where I live it sounds like the prelude to The Somme for the fortnight up to Bonfire Night.
