Have a look on google about the deep field image taken by Nasa with Hubble Space Telescope.

There were thousands of GALAXIES not planets - we cannot be alone.

Prof Brian Cox said on Human Universe tonight they calculate 30 billion earth-like planets in the Milky Way. But that doesn't mean there are 30 billion inhabited planets.

Life on this planet was unbelievably unlikely, with most evolution caused by coincidences. We also have a large moon in the perfect place to cause tides, which they reckon was a contributing factor. We are in the 'sweet spot' orbit-wise - not too warm, not too cold. The axis lean of the planet also helps, plus the 'wobble', the speed of rotation and speed of orbit.

Add to that the fact that life 'may' have come on comets and meteorites and we're looking at infinitesimal chances of intelligent life starting on other planets.

It would be cool though.

Given the vastness if space/universe then statistically there MUST be alien life out there.

But given the vastness of the distances in space/universe the chances of any visiting Earth is about as likely as me showing my arse in Woolworths...and there is no woolworths!

The nearest star is 4 light years away, so even if they could travel at light speed (unlikely), they'd need a lot of games to keep them occupied.

we cant find aliens because they are too far away...thats probably the most basic part of it.

when we look into space, we are seeing the past...visitors,messages would take a long time to be sent/received.

As I said previously, our galaxy is fucking HUGE, and then there are lots and lots and lots of other galaxies, some millions or billions of years older than ours.I cant see there being no aliens, possibly in a similar situation as ourselves..limited by physics..they may be space faring to a degree like us, but its impossible for them with their current technology and possibly future technology to ever be able to travel/send/receive information to other aliens.

as we send machines into space, we will no doubt send more intelligent machines into space.

Given that, it would cut out much needed survival in space problems, and thus, the machines may be able to come back and give us proof.

I like to think on technological progress will jump within the next 50-100 years...much in the way it has since the industrial revolution.

science fiction has rapidly become a reality for most of the planet already..what makes people think our future(IF we manage to behave),will not give us new insights into our wonderful universe and other possibilities we have discounted?

Yeah there's life on other planets but I'm confident it doesn't fly to us due to the immense distances involved.

We're still fairly primitive imo and likely of little interest to any advanced species out there. We hardly get along so limited chance with others who are very different and ukip wouldn't grant visas.

Neither Voyager hasn't found anything yet. But I meant that how would you convince/prove to people something is an alien anyway?

Distances are unbelievably huge between star systems, but that's nothing compared to the energy required to travel between the systems in any reasonable time (given our present understanding of physics).

Even signals have major problems. Interstellar space is not a perfect vacuum (though orders of magnitude better than anything we can achieve). High frequency signals propagate at different speeds to low frequency signals. Square wave signals that can carry information comprise a fundamental frequency and a series of higher frequency harmonics. Because they travel through space at slightly different velocities it means the signals 'smear' out. Even on Earth this is noticeable with radar signals. The systems have to use a process called 'quantisation' to recover the signals.

I'm sure, given the numbers, that there are other civilisations scattered around the rim of the Milky Way, but the average separation is likely to be huge.

The first land animals (proto-amphibians) didn't appear until 500 million years ago (within the last 10% of the life of the Earth). It's entirely possible that that we could be early developers too!

There might be some kind of intelligent life but it's unlikely to be in the form of little green men. And probably so far away we'll never have any contact in our lifetimes. Well maybe mine, I'm quite young
