We have a couple of Ikea bags for the big grocery shop. You can fit loads in them

Interestingly enough, legislation was brought in around 2006 / 2007 ish which meant that supermarkets would have to charge for carrier bags - which they all started doing until Asda took the decision to absorb the 'Tax' and all the others followed suit.

I'm going to learn to juggle, lol

The rate my son eats, I don't need a bag he sits in the back seat and scoffs all the way home from supermarket trips.

They should of made it 50p a bag if they wanted to do it for green reasons.

You might spend £60 and fill up x4 bags, thats an extra 20p. Where is the incentive to walk into the supermarket with your own bags.

Im that much of a nutter I buy the 6p ones, the bags for life and like fuck am I going to carry a carrier bag full of carrier bags in my car with me.

Im also the kind of person that if I jogged and reached pedestrian traffic lights, I'd press the button, wait for the green man, and stand still, I wouldn't jog on the spot.

If people are that fussed about paying 5p per bag they'll take a rucksack if they're only picking up a few bits or they'll remembered to reuse bags they already have. The whole point of the 5p per bag move is to stop people using so many bags! They're so bad for the environment in terms of what they're made from, where they end up and how long they take to totally degrade.

Totally agree. At 5p a bag I can see myself forgetting to take my own now and again but at 50p a bag there's no way I would forget to take my own!

Welcome to wales lol

We have been paying for bags for a few years now, it just becomes automatic to take your own.

I use the supermarket jute ones at about two quid each but had most of mine for years now they don't wear out.

I find it really strange when I'm in England and I don't have to pay

No thanks, lets keep it real.

Supermarkets are going to charge 5p a bag. Unless you take your own or pay 5p you will have to lift your sweater up and put all your good in that, whislt using your car keys and making sure the kids dont run off.

Or, you do as you say and leave your food and bits n bobs on the back end of the conveyor belt / packing area. Eventually you will get banned by all supermarkets, they may even wish to prosecute to make sure the banning order is upheld.

You do that long enough your will go a funny colour and then die. Unless you are really good at growing your own shit.

What a pity it dosent work as it should though, one day they will get it right.

Morrisons are the worst I find, tight as fuck in regards to checkout operators, never enough on, why should you queue at 7.35pm when only 2 are open and 27 are shut. I know not a lot of people are in the store at that time but even so. Im fucked off with 'please place the item in the bagging area', then the machine wont accept your £5 note as the corner is slightly turned over.

The reason Asda and the line have been absorbing the cost of bags is like all of the others they want peeps walking down the road with Asda branded bags. I never thought about ikea bags LoL but makes good sense as they are strong enough to survive some of the plastic containers that's cut through even the bags for life which I use and reuse. Will have to get me a couple of the blue ikea ones or even a couple of I branded garden sacks. If shops are going to charge for bags in fucked if I am going to be doing their advertising for free

It's a tiny environmental issue compared to things like food and other goods that are packaged excessively. . Then there is industrial waste and fossil fuels . I think it's more about the visible nature of endless bags being made and used just once. It's about each person doing what they can in an obvious way. That might cause folks to think about the bigger picture in terms of voting or getting involved in environmental groups that help prevent pollution. Of course you could view it as a pointless exercise and just refuse to partake. . But if you really can't be arsed to think ahead slightly and bring a bag . . Then you kind of give up the right to be miffed when you see rivers full of spent rubbish etc .

The supermarkets will soon decide to absorb the charge rather than make customers pay as many customers will simply cut down on their shopping and only buy essentials.

When it was tried in the 70s or 80s I walked out of many shops who tried to charge me for bags but there was choice then as some did not charge.

Today I would leave the shopping and go to a shop that provided boxes to customers for shopping.

We've been paying for the throwaway plastic bags over here for a good few years now. I think it's 22c each and it's been a huge success in terms of litter control. Pretty much everybody brings their own bag with them when going shopping, although my wife doesn't always want to come with me!

I refuse to use self scan checkouts. They take one person to man a bank of 8 tills, instead of employing 8 people. It's the supermarket way of cutting the wages bill so that they make more profit.

Asda have opened a new supermarket near to work and I used it for the first time last week. It has only self scan tills and a cigarette kiosk where a real person will serve you. When one member of staff insisted that I couldn't be served at the kiosk and I must use self service in order to pay I said ok no problem, then I left my basket of shopping in the middle of the floor and walked out.

If that's how they wish to run the store then I'll stick with buying my goods from the local butcher and greengrocer across the road.

Are people actually moaning about this? It's been this way for years here in Wales. You just buy the 50p bags for life and just remember to take them with you when you do your food shop. All money from plastic bags goes to local charity here and it actually says which one that particular supermarket is supporting that month, shows how much has been raised etc.

Easter eggs have got to be the worst for excessive packaging - all sorts of Krypton Factor style bits to get through before chocolate is achieved! We always take our own bags, but if there are some supermarket freeby bags, we pinch a few for use as bin liners for our little bins.

I work in a supermarket and people don't realise how expensive it is for these plastic bags.

Some customers who do their weekly shopping and only put a couple of items into each bag, I mean wff? Fair enough if they're heavy items like milk cartons or bottles, but light things? It's stupid.

I don't always remember my bags for life therefore I have to use their bags, and when they start charging for the bags I ain't going to whinge and moan as it'd be my fault for forgetting my own bags.

Supermarkets do have cardboard boxes for free near a checkout so if you don't want to pay for a bag you can use the boxes

People are missing the point, they charge and give it to charity here. I imagine the same is/will be the same elsewhere.

They want us to use less bags so we save the fish, trees and shit like that. They dont decompose in landfill sites and use harmful chemicals to make them.

Peace, one love and all that.

"apparently now all the supermarkets will be charging 5p for plastic bags as of yesterday so i guess that means our weekly shop will have to go down as a result or we're gonna have to learn to balance all our items on our head else face paying out 5p per bad...doh! im just gonna take my bodybag shopping and fill it up

If they want to charge me i will leave the shopping unpaid and walk out "

"I don't mind paying the price, and can understand the reasons why, just don't like paying for something and then walking around with an advert for that store on it!

If you feel that strongly about it turn the bag inside out, takes a bout 2 seconds to do this"

I take great delight from using the bags from one supermarket for picking up goods from another. Just like being awkward I suppose!

They should have a word with the tesco home delivery people then! I had £30 worth of shopping last week. Now I know that fresh and frozen go in different compartments so have a different bag but the other £15 worth of stuff was spread amongst 7 bags!! I could easily of fit into 3 without forcing it. And the fresh stuff one bag had some butter in it. Another 2 packs of ham! It's ridiculous.

I don't think they'd notice let alone mind to much.

Moo-Moo land :-)

Theres a lot less plastic bags stuck in trees n hedges since we started charging n what they do charge goes to charities so its a good idea n I don't miss 5 or 10p when I go shopping but if you do just take your own bags.....it is a shame tho that the politicians answer to almost everything seems to involve charging the average person in the street more all the time
