It's a must for me, my parents taught me, there's nothing worse than sitting opposite someone with bad manners (open mouth chewing, talking with a mouth full....of food).

My cousins taught me them when I was a little kid, don't think they are a thing of the past at all, they are Very important socially in fact.

I've refused to eat with my fork in my left hand and knife in my right(I'm right handed) since I was a child..

also refused to hold my pencil in a particular way..if I had done, I would never have been good at art

its not poor manners, its my choice thats all

My mum taught me and it's something we have passed on to our kids,we sit down together as much as possible for meals ,no phones at the table etc

No not a thing of the past, my parents taught me and I Inturn taught my son. People have come up to us and commented on my sons good behaviour in restaurants before. He wouldn't dream of leaving the table without asking and he knows he can't ask until everyone's finished.

I have no concrete answer to it, as I have shared a table with bad mannered and good mannered people from different social backgrounds, and I think it just comes down to whether the person cares or not... A bit like when you ask why are people fat.

It's tough really, a lot of people pride themselves on good manners and etiquette that they gained or established from their upbringing. But often, some of the same people will find others bad manners off putting or rude, when they've simply not benefitted from the same upbringing, that's all.

That said, I pride myself on my manners.

Not a thing of the past in my house. My parents and both sets of grandparents were very hot on sitting properly to eat at the table. To me it's important, plus you get to catch up on the day.

Yea A holds his knife and fork in the "wrong" hands....apparently it means you're incredibly well hung and an excellent sexual partner.

I think as long as you can eat without giving offence it doesn't matter what hand you hold your cutlery in.

Parents taught me... As i did mine .... Always ate at a table.... Was a shame when I saw other kids at sch age, not knowing how to use a knife n fork and eating like it was feeding time at the zoo...

Meal times when I was a kid were always relatively formal but I try to be more relaxed with our kids so they have eaten in the sitting room watching tv on occasion.

My kids are the running around and screaming kind. They have special needs. Don't judge parents by their kids behaviour. I work my arse off doing basic things with mine, stuff you probably never needed to bother teaching your kids. Stuff like teaching them to say hello and how to wave bye bye.

But they look like typical kids so I must get judged constantly.

If you see me, I'll be the parent handing out ear defenders to my kids in a restaurant, walking around with them and getting them to try and pull or push me over or try and push the wall of the restaurant down. And abandoning my food and legging it out when they do a runner.

I've not been able to finish a meal yet. We'll get there one day.

oh and who taught me - well it was everybody - was just the done thing - parents, friends, family , school - we all ate sat at the table - waited til we were told to start, ask to leave, holding cutlery properly, dont speak with mouth full etc
