Do you use or throw?

I'm quite thrifty and use most.

Share your ideas please.

I'm just making Stilton and broccoli soup. Stock made from left over chicken carcass. Stilton from our wedding reception back in August and broccoli just about ready for chucking.

I hate chucking food out. I shop daily to make sure I don't end up with surplus. But even then it's pretty tricky to shop for one so I always end up with a little excess in the fridge.

There is usually a pretty simple dish or two that can be knocked up with spare veggies, etc.

Having just bought out first home we are learning to cook from scratch and be more thrifty with food.

We get all our meat from the butchers instead of the supermarket, love slow cooked meals and all the stuff you can do with chicken

honest answer to that? Because I came from a poor family who didn't have a pot to piss in, we were given some right shit to eat, left over left overs some days, I've worked hard to give my kids a better life than I had and that includes not giving them left over food, if it's not wanted it's thrown away

sorry if that offends anyone

Any left over veggies you can freeze and make the most amazing gravy from next time you do a roast.

Any meat left over you can stir fry, curry, soup, casserrole or even make into a shepards pie.

My left over roasted meat goes in sarnies the next day, if Im disciplined to leave some for Mondays packed lunch.

I never ever throw any food in the bin - it's either eaten, frozen, composted or munchies for wild birds.

Throwing food in a bin is sacrilege, man!!

We had "ufm" unidentified frozen meat for our evening meal last night. Left over potatoes are being used tonight by myself.

Keith found a frozen cooked beef curry so he's having that with rice.

Hate waste will use everything we can. We like a few have mentioned buy our meat from a butchers. Cooking long and slow.

CÖÖL - that's what I should do...... but I live in the country & the pinemartens & foxes would probably make it more trouble than it's worth!

In the garden. Mrnotts has penned them up a few times but I like to see them roaming freely. Think we have about 12 now. 6 from this year. Just waiting to see how many of them are cocks

Titz Towers, North Notts

It depends what it is. I used to freeze no end of stuff following my mum's advice till I realised a lot of it tasted appalling.

I apply a test to leftover food. I ask myself how much the food is worth and would I pay myself that much money to eat this stuff? If I don't think the taste is worth the 50p the snap is worth, I bin it and eat something I actually want to eat, rather than feel obligated to eat.

No you don't have to be organised. I'm the most unorganised person I know and rarely have much time. All you need to do is have basics in your cupboard and fridge. Ut doesn't have to be time consuming either. stir fries, chow mein made with leftover chicken/pork/beef, carbonara with left over gammon takes as long as it takes to cook pasta, risotto, curries with leftover meat and veg. Leftover lamb becomes a fab shepherds pie. Etc etc. it doesn't take long and some of my best meals are using leftovers.

Yes meatballs taste better after a good deep freeze !

Can I just say, no squirrels were harmed in the making of this thread. It was a joke following on from the fox menu

Any leftovers we have go out onto feeding stations in the garden for the various local wildlife. Badgers love spicy food and deer have a sweet tooth - foxes have great fun with chow mein

I found an incredibly hot Bangalore Phal curry paste in a deli & made a Mega blaster of a curry & the local birds cleared up the leftovers, no problem ........... although I've heard since that some of the migratory birds have now given Africa the cold shoulder & now visit India for the winter, - according to autumn watch, that is!

Always use left overs. Left over from roast dinner will be bubble and squeak. That's always Boxing Day lunch with Turkey and pickles. Roast chicken carcass I use to make either stock or soup. Make a pie too sometimes from bits and pieces.

One of my grandmothers is in her mid 80's. She never wastes any food, she will always make food stretch to feed how ever many happen to appear at her house ! I think we all turn up when it's dinner time.
